Up until a week ago I was working at Maplin after jacking in university. As of Monday though I will be starting my new job as a PHP developer. As for the US/UK earnings, then yes, the equivalent job over there does earn less, in pounds (and more so atm because of exchange rates), but when you consider the cost of living over there, then it evens out. Mate of mine graduated from Loughbrough and got a job with DRKW in London starting about 36K, but a within 6 months was on about 40K. Now he's moved out to the New York office and earns only (only ) $50/60K (£28/33.5K), but he's better off over there than he was in London.
I'm an Officer in the U.S. Coast Guard. It pays well enough for me and my family to live well (not in dire straits or anything).
Student at the moment. My main income is as a freelance writer (webs/mags), but I also sell my general computing and electronics skills to people from time to time for a bit of extra cash.
Student, and running small computer service business on the side, makes me enough as my old job, but with only 1/8 of the amount of hours.
Systems Administrator for a medium sized International company. I make good money, but experience and a watchful eye on market tech trends will allow for additional growth and income. Working on my Security certifications, lots of virtual bad guys out there. That is the next pocket that I will angle for. On the side, I freelance onsite networking/PC Repair @ about $65-$85/hr (36 - 47.50 GBP) depending on the problem. Dont do alot of it as I want to stay home with the family. But I gained a lot of contacts through the years, and they call on me from time to time, as needed.
Administrator for a plastics recycling company It's ok...pays the bills...put I don't see myself staying there permanently (eventual plan is to leave the country (before I'm 30!)).
well, i'm a lube tech (automotive) well, i don't even always change oil, sometimes i just detail cars, but hey, easy money, boss is super lax, and nobody reallys cares there... US$7/hr atm.
I also work for the all powerful HP (who own compaq) doing enduser support for their printers. I also get jipped on the wage front!
Im an IT manager, and out of the kindness of my heart I do ICT support in some primary schools in my local area.
Seinor Design Draftsperson/AutoCAD Administrator......fancy title means I get to draft fulltime & also look after the AutoCAD installations & tech support. Pay is not bad, $22.50 CAD/hr, but I have been there 17 yrs. also I teach AutoCAD at night in our local college, $30 to $50 CAD/hr (6hrs/wk) later Eamon
Systems analyst for a hospital (8000+ users) and the pay is enough to pay for my house and cars, and keep my wife, kids, dogs, turtles and cat fed, and not having to work. The side work pays for the extras, I can't disclose my hourly wage (better than most, and over 60k US/year) but on the side (programming custom Machine Interfaces for testing building materials) I charge $145.00US/hour, and can't accept all the offers. Seems I've found a market (Plus I own the copyright to software used industry-wide) It's a living. But I've been thinking of taking a laptop support job for Compaq
Journeyman Electrician. I work mainly on comercial and industrial job sites. $19.50/hr Decent pay for a non union shop, and I lkike what I do. At least I think so, been doing it for about 11 years now..........
Oh good so there is a chance I might bump into someone when I'm over there. Just keep an eye out for a kiwi guy and an aussie girl wandering round the tourist sights from 28 June till 4 July.
