Hi. I'm planning to build a mobile computer, sort of a laptop I guess. I have a PICO board from VIA embedded that has VGA/HDMI/lvds1 ports. Before I search around for displays I have to know what to look for in a display suiting my needs. I´m interested in a 9-10" LCD monitor, with low power consumption if possible. Res is not very important here. But my big question is, what are my options regarding the video signal? I would like to have a flat flex cable that I can hide well(just like on a laptop). Is that possible? I´m very n00b when it comes to LCDs. Any tips are appreciated / Quizz
Hi quizz, Nearly every laptop uses LVDS screens. I'd say to look up a laptop in the desired size and put 'Insert-laptop-name-here replacement screen'.
I´ve been looking around on ebay for laptop screens, but they don´t tell me much about signal connection. Just that som have 20-pin connector, and some 30-pin. My pico board has a 24-pin LVDS panel connector, what does that say?
If it´s something of interest, the data sheet of the board says: The onboard LVDS panel connector allows to connect the panel's LVDS cable to support the single-channel 18-bit/24-bit display Note: LVDS1 supports 18/24 bits EDID LCD, please ensure your LCD do support EDED
Unfortunately the connectors for LVDS-panels are not all the same, and everyone uses their own solutions 20, 30 or even 40 pin and everything inbetween), so you'll need to test and try and maybe use an adapter-board. Some LVDS-panels have seperate backlighting-connectors, while others have the backlighting integrated into the LVDS-cable, some have EDID-connections (needed for communications with the panel to get correct voltages etc) some don't. etc, etc, etc LVDS sounds great in the beginning, but you'll quickly loose interest, once you've found out that there's no standardized connectors.
Yeah, I looked around and it seem quite tricky... But I found these two LDCs on ebay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370775391609?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 http://www.ebay.com/itm/370765725525?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 Would they work?
Nobody can say if they would work, until someone has tried these exact screens with the motherboard in question and managed to get em running. There's no way to tell by only looking at the specs and pictures.
But these LCDs comes with controller board. I though it was complete kits? And then connect mobo via VGA. Was I wrong?
In that case you're correct, but I thought the question was to be using the LVDS-connection of the VIA-board LCD-panels with VGA-input in various sizes are very easy to obtain actually, even from shops in the EU, like http://www.cartft.com/
Oh, the question was my options reg LCDs in general. Wanted to hide the cables, and LVDS seemed very usefull in that field. But thanks!
I guess you didn't get one of the boards that use pin header for everything. Too bad, it would have made it easier since you could used ribbon cable for vga, and everything else that need something flat.
