I would like to know what the best LCD or VFD is; one that will fit in a 5.25 drive bay. I want to get one to take up the last 5.25 that is on one of my computers. What is the best LCD or VFD software that is out now? Something small and efficient is preferred, as I do not like things running in the background (I ausrotten all background programs). I run Windows XP Pro. If the LCD or VFD does not come with a front plate, does anybody know where I can buy a 5.25 (USA or Europe) that is plain beige plastic, so I could dye it to match my DVD and CD-RW? I also need a 3.5 plate to use for the remaining 3.5 bay on this machine. THANKS
MO sell black face plates for single drive units... you'd probably have to get like a 2x20 or a 2x16 to get to fit in only one drive bay
I recently got a 2x20 VFD its very nice. MO have a bit-tech special offer on a 4x20 LCD problem is it wont fit in a single bay. I got my VFD from farnel electronics and assembled it following this Ice Hardware guide. Cost £45 all in. I had to custom fit it into a drive bay... ride
Its parallel, ice hardware have the guide. The bloo is coz of the filter I put on it. Got the idea after seeing Greatoldone's http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4944 I can't take credit for the idea! ride
where u get the filter from?? was the project hard to put together overall....id prefer to do it meself but might have to go for the easy way out... NK204-V
Depends on whether you can solder? I'm an old hand at d-type plug soldering from mod's before I even knew this scene existed! Got the filter from maplins comes on 1220mm x 53mm rolls, a lot for a little project! Dark blue QZ71N in stock on the web @ £4.99 I took me a couple of hours in all to wire it and cut the drive bay. ride
just to let you know, I doubt youwill be able to fit a 4x20 LCD/VFD in a single drive bay. The largest display from us you can get in a single 5.25" bay is a 2x20, and we have all the mounting stuff for it and so on...
Wow - I've inspired someone! Rider - are you using LCDCenter? Or is that Smartie? I need a serial VFD so I can get LCDC running.... Henry - do you do serial boards on their own?
Thanks for the replies. I now know that a 2x20 is the largest size that can fit. Is a VFD or LCD better? I would like to not have to solder. Can sombody please tell me the exact model to get that is the best quality, and has a good finish, without the need for me to solder, ect.?
GreatOldOne, I use both progs they both do the job. Would love LCDC to work with it! Cant get the mobo stats to work? Do they need a plug-in? Thorfinn, VFDs look the nuts, unless you want to invert and blue backlight a LCD!! ride
Rider, No - no plug in, but you do needMotherboard Monitor 5. LCDCenter and Smartie read the MBM shared memory area to get their system info.
why not move the disk drive to the 5.25" drive slot and then use the two 3.5" drive bays to mount a 4x20 LCD.
I have narrowed it down to two choices. I am going to get one of the following. VK202-25 GLK12232-25-SM I am considering the GLK12232-25-SM, because I read that it will fit in a 5.25 bay. I read it at ~ICEHardware. For the VK202-25, what is the difference when Wide Voltage, or Extended Temperature are added? Which one do you guys think is better? Which ever one I get, I want it to have green text, and black background. How should I hook these up when I get one? Is the 12inch Serial Cable, and -4BR Serial Cable all that I will need? Sorry for all the questions, but I have just started to get interested in a LCD or VFD. THANKS
I am going to use my last 3.5 bay to mount a Compact Flash/Smart Media reader/writer, so I can not put a 4x20 in both of my 3.5s.
