A significant amount of fittings for the custom loop are stuck in China thanks to the typhoon. The planned coincidental holiday over birthday for complete teardown and rebuild might have to wait and I might have to.... *gulp* work on my birthday Or do diy. Diy it is
Well… I did find a cheap ID card printer… And in this case I think they likely did inspect it, took one look at the state of the innards, and just said “nah, f’ it, sell the thing as ‘untested’, get some money on it”. I have never seen rubber rollers go that bad. Thick, black, sticky, tarry mess. I’m still going to try and refurbish it. I can’t get spare parts anywhere, but the “inner” part of the roller is plastic. If I can clean the gunk off - fully - I might be able to stick some new rubber on the plastic wheels and get it working again. I’m about half-way through cleanup now, and… gahd dayum… those “rollers” left a lot of mess in here… blech… This whole thing has seemingly turned into a massive project. I’ll throw a thread up at some point…

Fitted a solar trickle charger to the car, well that was the plan, I mean it's a 25 minute job so what could go wrong. Take off negative terminal, put socket wrench on top of battery, knock socket wrench into the bowels of the engine compartment. 15 minutes and some deft magnetic fishing later socket wrench retrieved. Remove nut from negative clamp to fit ring terminal from charger, drop bolt into the bowels of the engine compartment. Spend 15 minutes scouting around looking for it with a torch, game of hide n seek won by bolt, never mind thinks I, I shall delve into the quality street tin of plenty and pick a suitable close enough bolt, nope that's not going to work as it's a T- bolt that draws the clamp tight and I've got nothing even close OK, no need to panic, I didn't hear it hit the floor or the undertray so it can't have gotten far, cabling removed, positive battery clamp removed, battery clamp removed, battery removed, battery box removed, battery tray removed, begin fresh hunt looking for tell tale signs, tracks and any other trick I can think of. Tharr she blows, grabs magnet to fish it out, bugger it isn't magnetic, OK grab long nose pliers, wedge some other wires out of the way with another set of pliers to give me room, and then promptly knock it all the way through the engine bay onto the undertray. And no way I'm taking the undertray off, 1, I'm lazy, 2, it's never been off, so every nut, screw, clip and plastic fastener is guaranteed to snap, shear or round out, try to go in through the fog light surround, net result bolt not retrieved and now have broken fog light surround. Retreat inside to order replacement bolt from Amazon, sod it I'm in no rush and don't need to drive again until the 28th October, also order new fog light surround. Back to the coal face, replace battery tray, replace battery box, replace battery, replace battery clamp replace various wiring odd n sods, slam bonnet, start cleaning and putting away tools. Sit back and admires job not done whilst thoughts of the upcoming African chicken soup I've got for lunch start to take my attention, but hold on there skippy, why is there a gap in the drawer where a pair of blue handled pliers should be? the same blue handled pliers I'd used to hold some wires out of the way FFS, do everything again, battery, clamp, box, tray, all out, there they are, replace everything again, 2.5 hours later nothing has been achieved except firming up what I get to do next weekend when the spare parts arrive.
Why the fudge will people not leave the HVAC controls alone? Fairly recently moved to a new build production, warehouse and office facility which finally has heating and ventilation that works - previous site had a somewhat aged central heating system that was neither use nor ornament, and also no AC (site manager told us that we could not have AC as "someone might complain that they are cold" - apparently that was the "official reason - stop asking" sort of thing). Anyway, now we have a shiny new set of offices with some very nice and efficient climate control, but people will just not leave the feckin thing alone. "I'm cold" "it keeps blowing cold air on me".... Tough, the rest of us are too warm and you can put a jumper on, I cannot sit here with no shirt. and besides, 22C is not cold. If you are sitting underneath a vent and that's bothering you, move elsewhere, we have plenty of spare desks, just plug your laptop into another docking station and everything you need is now at the other desk.
The usual trick is to hand a remote to a "trusted" person in the office and disconnect the wall controls.
Accounts departments, and companies' use of freelancers as interest-free loan providers. Waiting on remittance on August invoices for two clients, both of which claim NET30 terms (so they pay you 30 days after you invoice - which, you will note, is already a 30-day interest-free loan). Accounts emails me back from the first, "there's no delay - it'll be paid on our next payment run and you should get the money early next week." "Early next week" is not NET30, and in your email from the 16th of September you said it would be paid "in our payment run at the end of this month (targeting 30 September 2025.)" Sure sounds like a chuffin' delay to me. The other client, meanwhile, has moved from just dropping the cash via ACH transfer into my US account 15 days after invoicing (yay!) to using some stupid YCombinator startup (founded, I'm assuming, by a beloved relative) called The New Money Company... and despite waffling on about how much easier everything would be, is still overdue in paying. Sure, it's fine, it's not like I've got a mortgage to pay or anything(!) Freelance life, eh? Bah.
That is rough GH, small companies are in the same position too when dealing with big companies sadly. One of our local big companies, world famous but infamous for its treatment of small suppliers and contractors puts them 120 days for starters and regularly doesn't even meet that! One of my customers famously used to triple his charges to them to account for this. On one occasion they needed work doing that day, he didn't start the job until he had sight of the cheque! It's great if you can do that, otherwise you're on a string waiting for them to pay your invoices... I hope they're resolved soon
I'd ask if it was Dennis Publishing, but that's not a thing anymore. Ye gods, they were awful. Fun fact: "Dennis Accounts" is an anagram of "Send A Coin, C*nts."
Had my flu shot yesterday, diabetes reduced immune system and all that fun, and by gods I feel rough today. My left arm feels like weighs a tonne, has a heckin' deep bruise feeling as well. I'll be fine tomorrow, it is always rough like this for me, had the same with the covid shots, yet I was fine with the pneumonia one, strange. Hey, if it stops me from getting the flu (had full blown flu twice and it is no joke at all) then it's worth it.
Hit a black lab on the way home. It was on the edge of the road, off-lead, when its owner dropped its ball mid-conversation. It bounced off the back of her heel and straight into the middle of the road. By the time I saw it, I was only about a car’s length away. Thankfully, my brakes are in tip-top condition, as are my reaction times it seems, so although I did hit the dog, it wasn’t too hard. He got up afterwards and looked rather sheepish about the whole thing. The owner was incredibly apologetic and kept asking if my car was damaged. Quite honestly, the front end could have been hanging off engulfed in flames and I wouldn’t have cared. I was just worried about the dang dog. Thankfully, he seems to be okay and was promptly put on the lead... Not exactly the best end to the week.
