Ditto what @ElThomsono says. You ended the week saving a dog's life. E: Give yourself a biscuit, you deserve it you good boy you.
Yup AFAIK it's breaking the law if you don't report killing a dog but not a cat. Although I think they were looking at changing the cat rule.
Ah ha. Didn't really know. Just had a quick look. Looks like you should exchange names and addresses with the owner, same as if it's a horse or other 'working' animal (which a dog is classed as). If the owner's not about you should call the old bill.
As with most UK laws it's not written very well and open to all sorts of interpretation. I read the Road Traffic Act as requiring the driver to give their details, and if they don't they must report it accident to the police, although I can also read it so that if no one asks for the drivers details then no harm no foul. And then .gov simply says you must report it, https://www.gov.uk/report-dead-animal , but as per most .gov guidance they oversimplify everything. https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1988/52/section/170 Specifics points for dogs are 1b(ii), 2 & 3 Meh, many many, many moos ago I was taught it had to be reported, if folk do or don't that's up to them.
Yeah it doesn't matter if the dog is killed or not, you're supposed to report hitting one. Quite a few other animals where that's the case too, but cats aren't on the list.
And yet, when I hit a sheep on the way to work and called the police, I was told I didn't really need to do that...Not well written, indeed
I had a re-think about this and I posted hastily - I do actually remember hearing this many years ago, but assumed it had fallen out of use. MAYBE it would have come back to mind if it were ever to happen (it certainly will now we've discussed it) but "Because I said so and it's the law" isn't exactly the reason I was looking for, more the logic. From memory, I think the answer I was given many years ago (rightly or wrongly) was because dogs are registered (or were at the time) and cats aren't/weren't. Regarding actually dead animals, it's probably for hygiene reasons, so someone can organise a cleanup. Assuming the driver hasn't taken the roadkill home as a cheap meal, of course. EDIT: That is indeed one unclear piece of legislation. In s5 is it referring to a "carriage for invalids" or "a carriage that is not valid" like a push bike? It's also a bit unclear whether if no-one asks for your details (because no-one is around) and you don't report it, are you still guilty with reference to s2, 3 and 4? I am splitting hairs and the answer is probably still "yes", but just interested in how far these things can be manipulated .
Oh you wanted the why, not the why, that'll learn me to stop for a second before posting whilst half way into a bottle of bourbon. I'm not convinced on the hygiene side for a valid reason as you don't have to report badgers or deer, I would think it may be because there's a larger lump of meat in the carriageway that's likely to cause another accident, but then badgers and deer again :dunno:
I think the why is that dogs are still classed as "working" animals - tools of someone's trade. Herding sheep, retrieving shot birds, hunting, etc.

Bah, the card printer I thought was a bargain actually isn’t. Something fairly critical is hosed, and I give up on it now. But now I have a half-used ribbon and a brand new ribbon, and they’re only compatible with this particular range of printers… I’ll keep my eye on eBay for similar models, but I’m wary of “sunk cost fallacy” here… Aye, that’s the “why”. And that’s one of the reasons why my cat (and any future cat we might have) is an indoor cat. If it isn’t people putting down stuff in their gardens that’s poisonous to cats, it’s getting hit and left at the side of the road. Keeping your cats indoors doesn’t just help protect your pets from shitty people, it also helps protect local wildlife from your shitty pets. Cats are incredibly effective predators, domestic cats can easily wipe out local wildlife populations and massively impact biodiversity.
Interesting to hear there are other indoor cat owners here. We have one cat who is an indoor cat on the instructions from the breeder. We have felt guilty at times and been told by some people that's it's cruel not to let her out. I agree with all the above reasons for keeping them in, I think she'd decimate the local wildlife and probably do a runner. Getting run over is a biggie for me, having had to take a neighbour's dead cat back to them and tell them that he'd been killed. We play with Mitzi every day and keep her occupied when she's interested in us. To be fair, she's feisty and not that sociable, she doesn't even sit near us let alone go on anyone's lap. Not quite what we were sold though, a cuddly princess who would want to be with us!
