Client #2 is *still* messing about. It takes a week for 'em to reply to each email, and the responses are the slimiest salesdroid patter you'll ever see.

I've now asked three times for actual figures as to how much I would have earned in FY25 under the new SOW (less than I did, I guarantee, thanks to a new hard limit of 40,000 words a month after which you can keep writing but they stop paying(!) and an unachievable bonus scheme which would require me to more than *triple* monthly traffic in order to qualify for a whopping $20 in five months' time), but for some reason I've only received puffery about the new scheme providing a "pathway to a 38% increase"...

Getting very, very tired. They've been the majority of my billing for six years now, but I think now they're under new management the writing's on the wall (rather than the website, hah!)

Got home from work and my dog did zoomies to see me. We went on a walk then suddenly he went really sad and started to limp. Hes now very very quiet and sat outside we normally have an hour playing but hes not bothered, he did have a little whimper ive checked him cant see anything. Ill monitor best i can, home alone so he will be alone tomorrow and friday while im at work. But cant avoid it , im a massive over thinker so trying not to google things or get advise just trying to vent ad im homr alone with my thoughts.

I hate my brain so much i over think and go negative so much, then panic attacks kick in and since its just me n the dog i spiral

Natural though, could you take him to a vet just to have him checked out?

Sounds like just a pull or a strain and maybe a delayed response to it all but might be worth it just to put your mind at ease?

Great news, hope he gets the all clear and it’s pretty simple. Animals provide no end of worry!

Ill for a couple of days last week as my back decided it didn't want to back anymore and I have come back to seemingly nothing being picked up..

Two critical notices last week which relate to work happening today (which I didn't know about as I was, well, not in the office..) have not been notified to anyone thus I am (slowly) chasing around trying to sort.

    It's getting stupid now...

Tired of dealing with a troublesome technician who gets in late, leaves early, spends half an hour making breakfast in the morning, is always outside vaping, and complains he has too much work to do when it's been proven the average day's work for him can be done in about 1-2 hours. And has the audacity to moan when I update the way test data is recorded, which makes it easier for everyone else in the company to access, but inconveniences him occasionally when the server is a bit slow.

I have mentioned this a couple of times to his manager now, and nothing's happened.

Then mention it to his manager's manager, take it up the chain if nothing happens.

Our offer on a house was accepted.

On the one hand: it’s about time I bought a property.

On the other hand: **** is gonna get very real very quickly.

Assuming, of course, that: we actually get the full mortgage offer; the mortgage doesn’t prove to be too hideously expensive (I would hope the DIP would weed out that possibility); the mortgage company’s valuation of the property agrees with our offer; the various conveyancing gubbins doesn’t reveal any issues; the survey doesn’t reveal any issues; the onward chain doesn’t collapse; and so on…

We have the opposite problem, can't book online (why?) and by the time you get through on the phone, all appointments are gone.

Got through to someone who had at least some brain capacity. Lady sorted both appointments over the phone which supposedly was not allowed

Regardless. New GP time once those appointments and results of those are done

What is with me and tech today...

    - NAS beeped furiously at 2am which normally only occurs in the event of a power outage (warning that it was shutdown without expectation) - turns out it was doing a firmware update...
    - Drive in to work without music as clearly someone was buggering around with the Tesla servers and I couldn't get 4G / LTE connection in areas it would normally have it, absolutely fine on the drive home..
    - Backup drive wasn't lighting up / didn't feel like it was running - it had gone to sleep which I have not encountered before (must have done it I just haven't noticed..) - Totally not me panicking that our primary backup was dead....:eeek:
    - Random Sentinel One False positive on two devices at work causing quite a bit of head scratching as the logs didn't make sense.
    - My work laptop just ups and hangs mid file save and them magically recovers as if I wasn't just about to throw it out the window, I then lost Ethernet completely at random..
    - Get Home to our Hypervolt flashing yellow (turns out this is actually white) and had lost connection to the servers. Power Cycled it and everything was good with the world again.
    - Opened my Mac to check on the NAS (this is how I found out about the Firmware update) only to met with a screen "your computer had to restart due to an error"... errrr ok, never seen that before. Seems absolutely fine now so..

Think I might read a book tonight!!

My venerable old Sony MZ-N710 NetMD portable player & recorder might finally be on its way out…

It was unearthed during my mother’s house move last year. I managed to get a couple of discs recorded via USB transfer at the time, but only after I’d picked up a mains adapter.

Has a lot of problems reading discs, even when it’s sat on a table without being moved or touched. It’s already had a thorough strip down and clean, which did seem to help a little, and it helps a little more now that I can charge the battery properly. The “gumstick” battery it takes is identical to a rechargeable AA in terms of chemistry, voltage, discharge curve, charging characteristics, etc. But it’s a completely different form factor, so it won’t fit in the “smart” charger I use for my Eneloops… until I printed an adapter.

It still kinda works… after a fashion… but if you so much as touch it while playing a disc then you’re almost guaranteed a “READ ERROR”. I need to test it on the 3v mains adapter and see if that’s better - these things tend to get a little sensitive to crappy batteries when they get older, so maybe more juice will help. If that works I can design some kind of voltage regulated LiPo/LiIon adapter and use that for power.

I have a real soft spot in my heart for MiniDisc.

Back in the late 90s when everyone still had tape players, or unwieldy portable CD players, I had this tiny little thing that produced sound that was indistinguishable from CDs (to most people's ears). It wouldn’t skip when you picked it up and walked with it, and I could carry dozens of albums around with me easily.

Later in the early 2000s I got a NetMD - now suddenly it was easier than it had ever been to carry around a huge music library. Affordable MP3 players of the day had bugger all capacity, and MP3 players that had loads of capacity were not affordable. The original iPod might have been a breakthrough product, but it was an expensive beast.

But more than the nostalgic fondness for old dead tech that's shared widely among my generation, this is my Sony MZ-N710 NetMD MiniDisc portable. The same one that I bought in the early 2000s. It languished in a drawer for many years, but before that ignominious fate it was a constant companion for many years... Eventually it will make its way to recycling, but I really do hope it can reclaim its place with me once again.

I feel your pain, I still have an MZ-E10, not used it in years but I'd be sad to see it give up the ghost.

Oh man, that is a very nice MD player! If that still works, and you still have the charging dock, remote, and a working battery, you’ve got a winner on your hands .

The absolute “endgame” MiniDisc portable is the MZ-RH1, Sony’s MiniDisc/HiMD swan song… But even broken ones go for so much money now.

My MZ-N710 is currently discharging its battery by playing discs on a loop. I’ll charge up the battery again and give it another shot in work tomorrow…

Yeah, looks like the wheels have fallen off Client #2. We're now approaching two weeks of radio silence, at least one staffer and one freelancer have been kicked out on a pretext, nobody seems very happy, post volume is way down - mostly 'cos I've written exactly one article for 'em this month, instead of my usual 3-10(!) a day, and that only 'cos I'd already agreed to cover a major event ahead of time. Not sure why the new leadership has decided to blow things up, but it definitely looks like it's falling apart.

Might take a little time off, catch up on some personal projects and decompress from six years of heavy workload, before finding a new outlet. Onwards and upwards, I guess!
