Other What Makes Your Life, Meh?

Too many work emails being reported as "urgent" when they're your urgent not mine, too many Teams communications when they should be emails, too many people repeat contacting for support on issues as is seems easier than remembering form last time or making notes (I'll make you a job aid if you request).

I love supporting on issues but when I have projects and deadlines I don't have the luxury of holding peoples hands.

I need another coffee

 

What you need is to tune an AI agent to filter the chaff and give you what you classify as urgent. I have mine formulating responses that I just approve, it's much more polite than I am and even sounds quite professional, well better than me going *^&% off!

 

Our car’s air conditioning went down over recent weeks. Airflow was weak, so replaced the pollen filter, that just led to a good flow of warm air, so took it to the local garage for a regas. Turned out there was a leak in the compressor, another in the high pressure pipe leading to the condenser and, the bottom of the condenser was badly corroded. Was quoted £595 2 days ago but, when it was finished, the bill was £568. Fortunately the local garage is a good one, so we know they are trustworthy and, their hourly rate is only £45 plus vat. Suck that main dealers!

Cold air was nice on the way home.

 

Silly me brought Guinness nutrasurge not realising I had to buy the adapter to make it foam up, father's day ruined.

 

What a turd of a week so far.

Everything's going 'Total Inability To Support Usual Performance' in work, I've had to rearrange several property viewings, it feels like I'm breathing soup, and if I so much as move from one room of my house to another, I turn into a greasy puddle of sweat.

The air conditioner I bought last week is most definitely earning its stripes. My only regret is not getting one for the bedroom and one for the lounge...

 

There's a pretty big client that wants to hire my firm, likes our pricing and experience, but they've asked that we update our liability insurance and that will double the cost.

In order for our pricing to make any amount of sense, we probably need at least one project from them a month. We're going to execute on the additional insurance and the first job and just hope we can impress them. If not, then we will have to revisit this whole thing.

But if it goes well, it could be a new six figure client every year, and that would be great.

Thankfully, I don’t encounter terribly many of them these days, and when I do it’s usually on some kind of social media.

 

My other half keeps seeing posts like “it’s just for a few days, it’s like having a free holiday in Greece or Spain, stop whining and close your windows and curtains”.

Oh Greece or Spain holidays where they put air con in the rooms for us un-acclimatised foreigners so we don’t die cos we weren’t brought up in hot climates with all the intrinsic knowledge and common sense to go with it?

I wouldn’t pay to go anywhere hot on holiday and I don’t want unmanageable heat to come here either.

 

No fans in their homes, no air con, no big fridge's full of chilled beverages, heavy clothes with no technical fabrics, single pane windows, no running water having to go out in the street with a bucket to get a drink, only 30 odd percent of homes having a freezer, no internet to moan on.

Thankfully I was only 3 in '76 and remember none of it, I'd not want to do it today with what they didn't have back then.

 

Ugh.

 

Shared broadband is down, I'm on separate so not affected by it. Choosing beggar housemate isn't happy about bandwidth on the backup interwibbles I'm offering, think early 2000s DSL which is slow these days but gets basics done. Thinking him bragging being a cybersecurity expert would change my mind...

Said backup interwibbles is via VLAN that requires RADIUS auth to connect. His creds aren't working at the moment so I'll need 3-5 business days to investigate and fix (read: tick a box)

That sounds unpleasant.

But it’s also irrelevant, because no one is disputing how bad it was 50 years ago.

I’m not putting words in your mouth here, but shutting down any discussion about increasingly frequent bouts extreme heat with “I had it bad that one time in 1976” is at best a deflection and at worst entirely disingenuous. That is the attitude that pisses me off, because both can be true: there was a bad heatwave and drought in 1976; and, we are seeing more extreme weather more and more frequently.

 

Bide your time, in 20 odd years you can turn the table on the youth and regale them of covid times and being present at the start of observable continued regular 'freak' weather events.

A lot of people are doing this in other places, not least in comments on the BBC News site. I'm not sure if they are just trying to wind people up or, just plain ignorant.

I was 12 in July '76 and, remember school being hell in the afternoons, with classrooms having big, south facing windows but, away from school, I don't remember it ever being so bloody hot and humid as yesterday and today. The idiots choose to ignore the fact the '76 temperature record, set in July, has already been beaten in June, with the new June record likely to be broken today. That one housemate is now offering his expert services to fix my broadband. Mate... I'm 90% of the IT department for my employer vs you got some kind of diploma in cybersec last moth. You should know very well you aren't getting physical access

Come at me I've got broad shoulders, they're really hairy and sweaty but broad enough.

Oddly I'd usually be whining like a Tesla (insert ev manufacture brand of choice here) especially as the house is sitting around 33 degrees at present, but asides from being a smidge uncomfortable this heatwave go around isn't bothering me that much, although it'd be nice to have windows that we can leave open overnight, but no such luck.
