Cheers, but Amazon managed make it through and deliver one just a bit ago - on foot, and I'm not sure how far away he had to park his van!

Reminds me of the time I tried bump starting my Aprilia 2 stroke, did it pretty much every day because I couldn't be arsed replacing the rectifier and to be honest the battery was going to be removed anyway since it was running avgas ready for track. Up and down the road I went until I could taste blood in my mouth and feel my heart in my throat.

    Killswitch.

A few days ago I got my Land Rover all put back together after cleaning the carb out and tried to start it in 0°C, it took a while but it went. Oddly, it wouldn't rev up? Normally a throttle problem will bog down or cut out or whatnot but this was doing nothing. I opened the bonnet and connected the throttle linkage to the carb and it suddenly worked a lot better

In my defence... I was leaving at about 0645 and it was almost pitch black on my driveway

I've also driven off with a brake disk lock still attached. In fact I've done that three times.... On the third attempt, the caliper bracket decided that enough was enough and it snapped. The repair cost served as a painful lesson: it's a hell of a lot cheaper to buy a reminder cable an idiot cable for your disk brake lock than it is to cock up your front brake :thumb:

In 2013 I bought a Seagate 4TB drive for £125, today the same drive would be £95, what gives? Surely they should have plummeted in price in over a decade?

They've learned from nVidia. Just keep making the new models (capacities) more expensive!

Capacities just ain't growing like they used to. A chart!

We're now a year or so beyond that more-or-less flat-looking bit at the end, there. Zooming in:

    upload_2025-1-8_14-54-24.png

Even the breakthroughs on the horizon are only talking about a doubling or tripling in capacity; back in the day we were improving by orders of magnitude. (My first drive was 20MB, then 4.3GB (215x), then I think 80GB (18.6x), then a few hundred gig, then about 2TB, and now... 6TB disk, 1TB SSD in the desktop.)

According to your zoomed in graph the drive should be a lot cheaper by now?

Sadly, nope! Those price drops are primarily driven by the launch of high-capacity (12TB+) drives, which drop the price-per-terabyte - but don't have much of an effect on the price of lower-capacity drives, because there's a lower limit: you've got to charge enough to cover the rest of the drive, from the housing on in, before you even consider the platters you're putting in it.

So, putting 200TB in a server has got a lot cheaper in the last decade, but putting 4TB in your desktop hasn't. Basically.

same goes for chiplet based anything... the lower limit of how cheap they can get is determined by the packaging and dies around the chiplet with the cores on it...

...it's why AMD's low-end ryzen cpus are all monolithic APU-derived offerings

Didn't turn the shed heating on early enough this morning, and it's a rather brisk 11°C right now.

EDIT: Actually, I apparently didn't turn it on at all. Must have dreamt it!

    I saw this.

Couldn't quite believe it. I know there would be some cases, obviously, but the fact so many can't use the loo by the time they start school is ridiculous.

You capitalise it when it's North ****ing London, so do it for Wales too.
