I bonded the mirror acrylic to the front of the photobox today—no major dramas. I managed to get it on straight and flat, and it's looking pretty good. I also fitted the LED strip inside the ornate frame, which adds a nice bit of depth to the front. In the evening, it'll create a shiny "Come over here" effect from a distance. One problem I never considered is that the mirror is impossible to keep clean. I've tried various methods, but it either ends up smeary or just not quite right. To make matters worse, some teeny tiny bubbles have appeared on the mirror. They're not on the surface, so the only explanation I can think of is that the glue used for bonding has seeped through the backing. They're not a huge issue, but with the lights on? Yeah, you'd probably notice them. So it looks like the lights will have to stay off—unless I modify the light strip to reduce the USB voltage and find a balance. Another option could be diffusing the lights somehow to soften the effect. All in all, just a bit annoying.
One spot decided to start identifying as a problem... Hooray for dehiscence! Nothing severe, its the most common complication. I'm simply annoyed by it, half-wifey has to keep an eye on it and I need to be much more pedantic with personal hygiene as its a insanely high infection risk due to the area I got surgerised on
Where abouts in Notts are you? I have an estate - albeit not the biggest estate (Focus) - but maybe if it'll fold a bit.
Thank you for the offer, very much appreciated, not easy to fit things like a 1 foot thick king-sized mattress in a 3 door Mini..... However, after having a bit of a poke around and also seeing that the council charge for a pick-up visit rather than per item and they will collect up to 6 things, I have gone and paid the £25 and gone "yup, that can go, and that, and this, and that thing over there too"... May as well take advantage of it all. So now there are 2 king-sized mattresses (been hanging onto one partly as getting rid of it was tricky and also that the cats love to sit on it as it is a nice high spot as it is standing up against a wall). Again thank you for the very kind offer, always nice to be reassured that not everyone on the internet are weirdos... (despite what our mums told us growing up...) Oh, and just because, I am in Bilborough, up near Strelley village, always been an NG8 boy.
Up to 6 things collected for £25 sounds a reasonable service. Mattresses are challenging to deal with, the local tip now has a a separate area for furniture and mattresses, rather than just landfill. Still tricky to get them there when vans aren't allowed.
Had a Shark “Detect Pro” (IW1511UK) cordless vacuum cleaner from John Lewis a year ago, and not too long ago it decided to stop charging the battery. Couldn’t find a replacement charger or battery at a reasonable price, so got on to John Lewis warranty support (because 2 year warranty). One 15-minute phone call later and they’d offered a full refund. A 1-hour trip to John Lewis to drop it off yesterday and all is done. The gift card came through via email before I’d even got back in the car. So on the one hand, absolutely top-notch service from John Lewis. A full refund of exactly what I paid for it a year ago (minus delivery fees) is not what I was expecting, and it was super quick and easy to do. (Even if the car park for the Cardiff store is a bit of an arse! ) But on the other hand, I can’t help but feel like it perpetuates a culture of disposable appliances… The vacuum itself worked fine, and I’ve been very happy with its performance, it just wouldn’t run for more than a second or two because I can’t charge the battery. Tossing the whole thing away when it can be “repaired” is a very wasteful way to deal with a faulty appliance. I even said to the guy on the phone that I’d be happy with a replacement battery and charger.
It may be returned to the supplier as part of their refurb initiative. BTW, I just got a eBay alert for 30% off Shark products
Yeah, they might do, I did consider that. But just replacing outright helps reinforce the idea in people’s minds that appliances are disposable4 once there’s an issue with something, it’s time to throw it out and get a new one. Maybe I’m reading too much into it The heads-up is much appreciated, but the refund was in the form of a John Lewis voucher which won’t get me far on eBay . Besides, I’m leaning heavily towards the cordless Henry at the moment. The performance of our “old school” Henry has been absolutely spot on, and I really do prefer having a bag instead of filters that have to be carefully washed and eventually replaced.
Just had an email about my new 3D printer (Elegoo Centauri Carbon - see "Latest Purchases"). Apparently, I won't be getting it for another week (was due today) because HM Customs & Excise have taken a "random inspection" interest in the shipping container.
Bought a Logitech keyboard and mouse set, which comes with a Unifying Receiver. I already have two other Unifying Receivers, one for a touchpad and one for a vertical mouse. I dunno where the touchpad one is, 'cos I paired both to the one that came with the mouse. You can do that! That's what "unifying" means! It's great! Yup. The keyboard and mouse aren't supported on the old Unifying Receiver. Okay, fair enough, maybe it's been updated, I'll just swap to the one it came with. NOPE! The new "Unifying Receiver" is neither forwards nor backwards compatible. I need one Unifying Receiver for my old devices, and a different Unifying Receiver for the new ones. Logitech... we need to talk about the definition of the word "unifying." EDIT: Turns out the new keyboard and mouse do not come with a Unifying Receiver. They come with a Nano Receiver, which is absolutely identical to my Unifying Receiver except it doesn't... unify. Nor can the keyboard or mouse be used *with* a Unifying Receiver. So, if you buy a Logitech wireless something in this, the Year of Our Lord 2025, you will receive either: a Nano Receiver, an identical but incompatible Unifying Receiver, or a still-yet-also-incompatible Bolt Receiver, which is at least identified by being printed with a yellow symbol. Amaze!
A new job opportunity has come up with better pay and more flexibility regarding remote work. The only reason I'm considering it is that my current team is going through a transition, and overall job satisfaction has been declining for some time now. The problem is that this role leans heavily toward administration and business management. While moving up the ranks would provide good development opportunities, I have a feeling it will be painfully dull. On the upside, the increased flexibility would improve the work-life balance I’m eager to fix and allow me time to balance it against other ventures. I spoke to my boss about it, and she assured me that those opportunities would be available in the near term within the team, though she couldn’t guarantee a specific timeline. Ultimately, she said she wanted me to stay and wait it out. However, she was supportive in saying that she wouldn’t stand in the way if I decided to pursue the role. I dunno.
Last day in the lab today with people I've worked 20+ years with, they've been made redundant and I switch to full time WFH, very strange times.
Opened an ISA. Why Meh? Nothing to put init... was mostly to abuse an introductory promo... *touch wood* that should change later in the year though...
Haha, I feel your pain I've also had the joys of Logitech's incompatible wireless receivers. I bought a wireless keyboard & mouse combo (K270 & M185) because it was cheaper than the standalone K270 keyboard. When the keyboard broke I replaced it with another K270, but this time the standalone keyboard was cheaper than the set. All great until I discovered that the standalone K270 and the bundled K270 are subtly different, in that the former uses the unifying receiver and the latter uses a "wireless receiver". And the standalone has a white underside whereas the bundled keyboard has a dark grey underside, fwiw. The positive to be taken from this, however, is that my MX Master 2 uses a unifying receiver so I can run both the keyboard & mouse off the same receiver (but actually it makes zero difference as I use a vertical mouse these days so the MX Master lives in a drawer instead - but if I did want to use it, I wouldn't have to sacrifice another USB port, I guess?) So good job, Logitech, for selling what you claim is the exact same model of keyboard despite them using a different wireless receiver. Good job.
Client (in Indonesia) schedules a call for 12pm local time, which is 5am GMT. We reply saying please can you schedule for 2pm (or later) local time, >7 am GMT. No response. I set alarm for 4:45am but due to my lovely brain it decides it wants to wake up every hour from midnight because it knows I have an alarm set early. Finally stop pretending I as asleep at about 4:00am. Have breakfast, a cuppa, and boot up the laptop for th 5:00am call. Client joins and says "Oh, we should reschedule till 4pm (9am GMT) so that staff from the UK office can also join" FFS! Only meh, because it has meant I cleared some backlog work without being pestered/interupted this morning.
I tend to put wireless receivers in the USB hub on the back of my monitor that would otherwise go unused. It's not like I need keyboard & mouse when the monitor's turned off anyway.
