I personally use VLC media player, its free and i think open source? Plus it's light on resources - simple and easy to use :D

Also works on windows and linux.

I just use WMP for videos (I watch hardly any videos) and for music I use foobar2000. An awesome piece of software!

I've been using VLC player for a while but have recently switched to KMplayer which I've found to be very good. It has built in codecs and support for many file types including .mvk, .avi, .mov and .mp4.

+1 for Winamp with audio files. Small, free, skinnable, and has some really nice plugins available for it. No matter how I customise my desktop theme, there's always a skin to be had (or made) so it matches perfectly.

    VLC for video.

i use my squeezeboxes for music playback and itunes to manage ipod syncing and podcast management only. for video playback i use VLC and windows media centre with the shark007 codec pack installed.

To be honest, so long as you install the relevant codecs Windows Media Player does a great job.
VLC for those files that won't play regardless.

WMP for me, and MediaMonkey to handle iPod sync-ing.

Media Player Classic for back up.
