Hi everyone I've had a Tagan TG480-U01 for 4 or 5 years now, and while it works absolutely fine, I do have some objections to it: 1. The PCIe cables have a weird ferrite bead on the end and way too much heatshrink, meaning I can't bend them out of the way and I effectively lose 3 hard disk spaces in my case. 2. It gets noisy under full load, and makes my case vibrate at an irritating frequency. 3. I think it's limiting my overclocks. I've not been able to make my Q6600 go any faster than 3GHz with either my P5QL-E or a Gigabyte EP31-DS3L, despite relaxing memory timings, lowering the multiplier, turning off C1E, raising NB voltage etc. 4. My computer is the most power-hungry thing in my room at uni and my bill was £20 last term. The tagan is apparently 70% efficient, so getting a nice 85% one should mean a new PSU subsidises itself over a couple of years. My spec is: ASUS P5QL-E mobo Q6600 currently at 334x9=3GHz and 1.3V 2x2GB of OCZ platinum stuff at 2.1V HD4850 not overclocked DVD-RW drive 2x 1TB Samsung F1s 1x 250GB Samsung old SATA drive Floppy drive/card reader combo 3x 120mm fans The eXtreme PSU calculator says I need about 400W, but given my overclocking problems and the way my 480W one speeds the fans right up, I'm not convinced. So, my question is: What power supply should I get? 500W? 600W? Brand and model? I presume that most of the time, the system is only using 150-200W and it only goes right up to 400/500W when I'm encoding videos or playing games. It would therefore be good to get a PSU that's really efficient at 50% too. I'd like 83%+ ideally. Finally, I don't really want to spend more than £75, and closer to £50 would be much better. I'm considering getting the 700W FSP one from scan that's actually really good despite being £35, but it may have cables that are far too short. Anyway, thanks for any help! ch424

Unless you are planning on going for crossfire in the future... jbloggs suggestion would indeed be better and save you some money.
Yeah got the Corsair 450w or the Silverstone 500w 80+ efficiency, it'll run fine even slap a 4870 onto that and it'll still be ok
Another vote for the corsair - I've got a Tagan 480, and a Corsair 550, and would always reccomend the corsair - both on heat produced, and sound. The cables are also a lot easier to manage! RwD
the vx550 is only 10 bucks more looks like on scan.. nothing wrong with having a bigger supply than needed- especially if it's that close in price end of the year is when to buy these things though.. can usually get some sweet deals
Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I think I'll wait for a bit for the prices to come down. Enermax do some 86%+ units, yet nobody has recommended them - is there something wrong with them?
i wouldn't it is a rip off look at this silverpower 500w http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/500w...er-80-Plus-CertifiedIntel-ATX-12V-6Serial-ATA or if you have the money to spend http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/620W...CI-E-SATA-80plus-Eff-ATX-12V-V23-EPS-12V-V291 same price of corsair but an extra 100w which will come in handy when you upgrade to a high end card
This is the 3rd time I have pointed someone in the direction of this PSU, don't know if anyone has actually took my advice though. I think it is an absolute steal at this price. It is a "Antec 650W Neo-Power semi-modular" highly efficient (up to 85%) I got one a few weeks ago and as I had never used the company before I was a bit apprehensive about it. Well there was no need to be as it is a great PSU even at the R.R.P. and it arrived in 4 days, so quite quickly. They are asking for £59 but I put in a offer of £50 and they accepted it no problem. Maybe you can try £47 or even a bit lower, you never know but for even £50 it is a fantastic buy. http://tinyurl.com/r923pm Edit- I forgot to mention the one negative if you are in the UK- it does not come with a UK power cord, get one from the kettle or something
