im building a pc, im gonna put a 1.3 duron in it cd burner, floppy etc, no cathodes or suchlike at the mo. just a boring pc, but i need a psu. i like the q-tech 550 watt that macro reviewed but i have heard from a few peeps that it has a mind of its own and turns off when ever it feels like it, and ive read somewhere that a few people have upgraded from a 400 to the 550 and it cant turn their pc's on. do any of you people know anything about it and if it is crap can u reccomend another psu? cheers alex
you should happily get away with using a box standard 300w PSU if you want more buy any AMD "Recommended" 400w PSU, no need for a 550W PSU man !
yeah, i know i dont need a 550, but i like the look and cant find a lower wattage one, but im thinking of putting a job lot of cathodes in it so in the long run a 550 might be useful??
Cathodes don't draw much power but they do give off some electrical interferance. (Don't plug one into the spare molex on your hard drive power lead.) I would look at getting a lower powered PSU, but one from a good quality company like Antec. Tech Report have a review at http://tech-report.com/reviews/2002q3/psus/index.x?pg=1
I second the suggestion of Antec power supplies, they're absolutely excellent. I reviewed the 430W TruePower model here if you wanna take a look: http://phlux.co.uk/articles.php?aid=24
When I do upgrades for people based on the 1.2 Duron, single hard drive, CDROM etc I usually get the Nokia style case for £20. The PSU that comes with that has caused me no problems so I would say pretty much any supply is ok. Although, if you are thinking of upgrading in the future I can thoroughly recommend the Q-tec. I have had no problems, it looks great, and my voltages are spot on.
Maybe my stupid way of explanin things has confused u lot, sorry. The only reason i want the psu is coz i like the gold case and the red fans, on the q-tech site they have lower wattage ones but from what i can see you cant buy off it, and i cant find anywhere that sells the lower wattage ones
