I'm about to buy 2.16 ghz c2d macbook pro and I wonder about ram upgrade, which essentially will be the first thing to do after purchase. Are macbooks picky when it comes to ram? Do I have to use the same brand modules to get dual channel? If yes, what modules are by default in macbook pros? I don't want to waste my time on selling old ram stick and buying 2x1gb kit when i can just get matching one

    noooo. don't do that :p

i know they're picky with corsair modules, but crucial and kingston modules both work just fine. (crucial guarantee it, and i am running a kingston stick in my macbook pro right now)

Yeah - DO NOT BUY RAM FROM APPLE - it will cost you much more than buying it elsewhere.

You can try just dropping in a 1 or 2 gb stick and seeing if it works with the 1gb stick that it comes with.

The C2D MBP has an interesting tidbit about it - it can take up to 3gb of ram. 2gb in 1 slot and 1gb in the other. I am guessing that you wouldn't be able to run the ram in dual channel after that, but you'd have an extra gig.... I'm not sure what would be better - 2gb in dual channel or 3gb not in dual channel...... Anyone know?

dual channel doesn't really buy you much performance gains any more, so the extra RAM would almost definitely be the better path.

oh bugger... i've just bought corsair value select 2x1gb kit for my macbook (had some kind of mind disorder, i mixed up crucial and corsair and thought crucial is the brand to stay away from), corsair's site says that its compatible with my macbook and it was dirt cheap (less than 80GBP, which is great as the prices for computer parts are higher here).

People seem to get mixed results - mostly with core duo macbooks, so i hope my c2d macbook will be fine, also some people that bought the ram in the same shop as i did say that it works flawlessly...

well, ill find out sometime next week when my mbp and ram arrive :)

It should work the intel mac's aren't picky on ram, in fact corsair are about to release some mac specific mem kits as well.
