You know you're spending too much time on IRC when you start refering to yourself as '/me'

    1024x768 @ 85Hz on this Gateway EV700 17'

Tis a bit poor, but good 17's cost an absolute bomb!

    :)

    Mine didn't. :)

And anyway, 85hz is stable enough, surely?

    1600x1200@95? on a 17"?...I don't think so...not even my 21" has enough bandwidth for that....It tops out at a mere 88Hz...

I can run at 1024x768@92Hz. 1600x1200@64Hz max. Good old P-Strip finishes it off for me :)

On one of my monitors it's a 17", it handles 1600x1200 @ 75, I love that res, I have it on my 19". However it is a bit small on a 17".

I wasn't saying you couldn't run 1600x1200 on a 17"...I was saying you wouldn't manage it at that mentioned refresh rate, because 17" monitors don't have that much bandwidth.

My 21" monitor has 109kHz bandwidth, which is enough to allow 1600x1200@85Hz, and that requires 106.7kHz. A GOOD 17" monitor (Sony G220) has 96kHz bandwidth, enough for 1600x1200 @ 75Hz only. They don't bother putting expensive, high-bandwidth electronics into smaller monitors, because they're too small to run effectively at high resolutions. I find 1600x1200 on my 19" to be too small to use comfortably, so I run that in 1280x1024 (Although I'm sure a Sony 19" (for example) would be perfectly usable in 1600x1200). I would try to run my 21" in a higher resolution, but I bought the "Cheap" sony 21", which isn't so good at resolutions above 1600x1200, and my GF2MX can't really hack it either...
