I am after a virus scanner just for scanning when i choose to, i dont want nothing running in the background at all just a simple scanner that will find virus's/malware/spyware e.t.c. any ideas?
Most antivirus programs have settings. Go in options and turn off real-time scan. Do not make compromise to use a low quality software. I use AVG Antivirus and have this option.
Install Microsoft Security Essentials, reboot, then open the program, go to the Settings tab and untick the 'Realtime protection' option (http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/7905/20100409163226.jpg). This disables the always on aspect, but still provides an option in your mouse's right-click context menu to scan select files when required (http://img697.imageshack.us/img697/8788/20100409163339.jpg).
