I'm not sure what you're getting at. I quite enjoy HardOCP's no-nonsense approach and I'm also a pretty big fan of Techreport.com's content too.
Thanks for your kind words. Just for clarity, if Bit News appears "very selective", that's only because we have finite time and what gets posted each day is what we were able to get done on any given day squeezed around reviews, mods and manufacturer meetings etc It's certainly interesting feedback to have. It's not exactly a postive thing, to give the impression that we're being selective. We honestly try to find anything interesting, topical and current with Geek Appeal. We'd LOVE to publish more news each day (and especially at the weekend) but there just isn't enough hours in the day for the full time team, unfortunately. If anyone is interested in gaining experience in online tech journalism, drop me a line: geoff.richards@bit-tech.net Plus, anyone can send us News if you find something cool: http://www.bit-tech.net/news/submit/
Sorry, I wasn't critisizing tyhe work you do, I was just saying that I personally don't see bit-tech as a news site. I was always under the impression that it never really intended to be a news site. After reading this column and the comments made on it in the forums it certainly came across to me that BT was trying to differentiate itself from others and not just be another [news] site like el reg/the ing/slahdot and but instead focus more on articles and reviews which it applies it's own personal style to and it is this that I think it pulls off very well.
It's cool mate - I didn't think you were having a go at us or anything (have you read this? http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2006/02/14/flame_wars/) You're correct in thinking that bit-tech is not trying to be a "News Site" - there are already many others that do a great job. But that is all they do - News. We ARE certainly more focused on articles and reviews, as you say, but we still want to provide news to you guys, otherwise we wouldn't even bother writing the amount of news we already do. At the end of the day, we'd love to be able to do both: keep pumping out the kick ass reviews and features that we are already known for, as well as keeping our readers uptodate on the day's events via the News Page. Like I said, I found your feedback very useful. It's not our aim to provide "very selective" news. I dare say that if we had the resources to write 10+ stories a day, hopefully it wouldn't look like we were being super picky. Overall, things are going very well for us. 2006 is going to be a BIG year for bit-tech so I imagine these little issues will be resolved over time as we continue on our path of global domination
Bit, every article and how ever much time I have left on the forums, Toms for the things that seem interesting. I just prefer the layout of bit-tech, it is so easy and not all over the place and cluttered. The adverts are well placed so as not to distract all attention but still be dominant enough to notice, they intergrate well with the forums and the main site. I avoid many sites because of the overpopulation of adverts, and the hopeless layout that hurts to find anything relevant. Bit-tech is teh 1337.
I usually do the following rounds if I'm looking to get updated: www.tomshardware.com - Very thorough reviews...they don't really slam anything, but they do a good job staying up to date and being very informative. They have cool guides and unique articles. Definately my #1 site for tech news. The new website sucks though... www.bit-tech.com - bunch of limey brits. heh. Definately the best site for the amateur scene. The stories/articles/reviews, which sometimes seem less frequent than other websites, are very thorough and well done. I'll take quality over quantity any day. The case mods are what really drive the forums, and a lot of the site traffic I would assume. The internationalism of this site is what really interests me...but I'm getting off topic. www.anandtech.com - Eh, decent...I don't like the layout. The reviews are alright, just more of the same stuff your normally see on tomshardware and bit-tech. I usually only check there to see if I've missed anything. www.arstechnica.com - Same thing as anandtech, bad layout...usually more of the same. Sometimes they have unique stories. www.hardocp.com - From what I can tell, they never update frequently. Nice site for honest (well, uninhibited) reviews. Doesn't seem as professional as most. www.trustedreviews.com - My last resort site if I'm really trying to find something new to learn about. I usually don't visit this site often.
