My pc runs fast enough, looks pretty decent, and i got enough hard drive space for the moment.. Now the question is: What do i buy now? do you guys ever feel as though you really don't need better/faster components? or more bells and whistles? i feel like i have everything i need... and quite frankly.. i don't like it. i want to want more stuff again!
Get another case, and mod it up. My first case was my experimental case. Now i'm doing up sketches for my real challenge, now that I have a few fundamentals under my belt.
I guess it's just wierd, cause like, my mobile phone decent.. i don't really need a pda, or laptop or anything. and i don't "really" neeeeeeed another pc.. it would be nice to have a second machine... but, heres a question: is it really needed? I watch a lot of movies and such, but my TV is smaller than my pc monitor.. so i watch movies on my pc anyway. an mp3 / file server could be usefull, but i live in my room most of the time anyway? What do people here do with a second pc?
Why don't you get into something else which eats up lots of money? Hi Fi, Photography, Cars, Bikes, etc, etc, etc
wait a day and all your system components will be out of date and then you can go and buy some more top of the range bits
I play music, and stuff. so the stuff to buy there is endless... although do you guys find that hobbies come and go every few months? i mod for a few months, and do computer stuff, then i'll get into music for a few months, and then art for a while.... maybe a nice SLR camera would be good.. i do really enjoy my music though, listening to it.. so the mp3's audio hifi type system could be fun..
aye, faster and better... well my system aint currently super fast. but it's certainly not a bad system at the mo. heres the spec: Asus a7v333 athlon xp 1800 256 MD pc333 DDR 120gig Western Digital HD 40gig HD (random make.. can't remember now) 16x CDR new Pioneer DVD rom. Noritake VFD remote control receiver / credit card sized remote. etc.. so it's not all that bad.. it does need ram however... so that might be required... can Anyone mention a use for a second machine?
alaric: yes all good things.. but what would i do with a free bsd box? I'm trying to learn linux at the mo. and such, and i'm also a web developer.. so i guess hosting my web server locally would save me some money, and also give me some flexibbility on what i run. i got adsl, so connection aint much a problem (dunno about static ip's though..) firewall could be okay. but seems a shame to waste a pc on just a "firewall" task. maybe a firewall/fileserver would be cool? so i could connect to my home file system at work, and friends houses... play my mp3s, and copy files and such. and also connect to it from my main box at home. as a storage box.. i was wanting to get a small mini-itx type system. would a limited system spec be able to handle all that? streaming files around the place?
Yeah, hobbies come and go in a way. Just a question of the position you get into. I haven't performed any major upgrades (other than a new hard disk because the old one died) on my machine for nearly a year now, and still don't feel that I need to do anything. I have a good hifi, and whilst I'd like better, I don't have the cash, and I may be emigrating soon, so there's no point buying new stuff. Lately it has been my camera gear which has received the attention, with a new camera body (EOS 3, feb), new lens (20 f2.8, july), new flashgun (550EX, today, see "my new toy" thread) this year. Around £800 of stuff left on the list (tripod, power booster, 2X TC, lowepro backpack) for that. Then I'll be out of uni, and need a car, etc, etc, etc....But I'll also be being paid. Maybe even in some nice location of my choosing (read australia).
yeah, i think you can't really stay focused on one hobby for long periods of time.. i know i can't anyway. I do a lot of web development, but it comes and goes.. i'll not touch it for like 6 months some times, cause i find it boring.. then i'll get back into it again. and theres always the "i might be moving house" thing. i'm in a shared house, and so can't like wire the house up or anything, which would be very cool. perhaps i should get a house! then again i'm only 22. Isaac: your camera sounds great.. i recently tried to fix my slr, it just doesn't work for some reason.. it's an old sh*tty Seagull MN-1 i think.. with a sigma lens of some sort. i turn it on, and wind it, but it just wont "click" or take a picture, i thought the battery needed replacing, but that didn't fix it. ahhwell.. sounds like i need one of those fancy new automatic SLR's.
Ron: true.. that is in fact a really good piece of advise.. but i'm a "spendaholic" if i don't spend i get sad. shopping makes me feel good. thats why i gotta leave my credit card at home thorought the day whilst i'm bored at work.
If you are looking to upgrade, go with monitor and speakers. If you watch movies, a 5.1 system is a must : you can pick one up at any price point you can dream of. You also neeeed at least a 19" monitor, 21" is better. that should eat up a nice wad of cash
if you have a huge wad of cash to blow, i'd suggest getting a VPW500 50-INCH PLASMA MONITOR PC and if you're REALLY loaded, how's about you pick one up for me too?
separate gaming system... I have to have a secondary otherwise I spend time playing games that should be used for doing schoolwork...
Sony F-520 monitor Denon AVCS amp + B&W fronts, rears and centre speakers + REL sub + 5.1 DTS compatible sound card Theres £2000+ gone easily alternatively you can send all your money to me I feel the same way its kind of unhealthy I reckon (plus damn expensive )
haha. alll gooood suggestions.. i really could do with a new monitor... or perhaps go for the dual display setup. cause i could do the photoshop thing over two displays, and also watch widescreen movies across two monitors! (if you disregard the border between them....) anyone know a nice monitor with no border around the edges? or at least very small? i'm talking flat screen... doesn't need to be huge.. or overly pricey. anyone use x10 camera systems? that could be fun... i like the idea of using my pc as the centre of all my home stuff.. movies, games, internet, video, music, etc. also what do people think about desks and work spaces? anyone got a really cool workspace / desk?
