A relative gave me his computer after upgrading to a newer PC... and its old... VERY old, where talking 128MB RAM, P3 CPU and 10GB HDD... Is it anygood for anything at all? or only good for the bin? BTW it came with a 15" LCD monitor which is a little damaged on the screen, but nothing to bad. Any idea's would be helpful
Its good for giving to me Or a file server, which is what I would use it for. Or maybe some sort of freeview PC? So you can run your TV through it and record progs etc.
File server or download/torrent box. Bear in mind though that a K6@450MHz running a heavily lited Server 2003 and µTorrent with two torrents uploading keeps the CPU usage all the time >50%!
Server (file/torrent/print) will do very fine if you use linux and disable the graphical interface. Dunno about recording TV programs cause if you wan't to record (or playback) high res it may have trouble.
throw linux+mpd on it and use it as an music streamer. it won't have nearly enough power for freeview, even if it's only SD.
mpd for streaming music, geexbox for sd playback, ipcop for a firewall or a headless server for what ever you want, internal web server or torrent box.
what about a large paper weight?? or maybe a door stop?? if you really need to use it then as everyone says file server but i suggest give it to a charity shop so they can make some good use out of it! Be generous this year lol
I recently binned my old P3-500 machine that I got free from a relative. I did however take out a few bits and donated them on the Bit-Tech forums first...
