One of my LAN buddies is seemingly having RAM problems with his older rig. It's a Gigabyte Z68 and keeps beeping, despite changing RAM slots and having cleaned it all. It passes Memtest allegedly, but still plays up on LAN nights. Should he try and find an artificially expensive Z77/H77 (he can live without OC), board or move on? I've suggested that if the 2x 8GB DDR3 sticks are OK, that he should go Haswell with a Z87/Z97 and an equivalent i5. What do you think? It's still used vs older used, and he's not got the budget for Ryzen (or s1151), because DDR4
A Haswell update might be your best bet... they seem to be easier to find. I have a few boards that need attention, but I will have to get into more testing before I can offer them to you.
Thanks B, good to hear from you. I di say I'd PM you and have failed to, with a stupidly busy week since last Thursday! Unlike me, my friend would be happy with an ATX board You got any tiddlers in your collection - I mean mATX!!
The only one that I have is one that'll make you cringe... it's a stone cold, dead as they come, Maximus VIII Gene. I'll have to test some of them this weekend and let you know. I have amassed quite the collection, as you may have seen.
Thanks B, no hurry on that. You seem to have cornered the world market in cheap and possibly mendable boards! Stone dead M8 Gene? A tragedy I tell you
