Ok i have a MK2 Astra that me and my mum share. Its seen better days but thats all there is to drive atm. Its a horrible dark red/ burgandy colour and has many battle scars. I dont want to spend too much as its not going to be worth it in the long run, so what would be better, trying to spray it myself a differnt colour or should i just patch the scratches?

There is rust pretty much everywhere, what would be the best way to repair this, a hammer and filler or get it welded?

theres other problems that i think need doing steering etc but i'd like to try and fix them myself rather than waste a load of cash on a car thats going to be scrapped in a years time, is there anywhere that can point me in the right direction?

Buy some ATS cup wheels and a lowering kit, keep the rust ;)

But seriously if the rust isnt structral ie. would cause it to fail an MOT then whats the point? If you want a cool car do the above.

First thing to do would be to buy the Haynes manual (i'd suggest ebay as they are quite expensive new)

Following that you should be able to get all of your mechanical problems sorted.

Then you should buy some rust-preventer (kurust is good apparantly) or some Hammmerite red-oxide primer. Use a wire brush and wet and dry to remove the worst of the rust before coating with your chosen rust proofer. You can then either paint over that with the correct colour from Halfords with a rattle can or you could look into buying a compressor and a spray gun. Screwfix have some cheap ones, the smallest you can use is a 2hp, 50ltr one and these are about £130. The paint will cost you about £100.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

hmm they are nice wheels but tbh they're worth more than the car. I have seen a set of vauxhall wheels for about £100 with newish tyres.
i was thinking of lowering it a bit, not that it needs it but would look nicer, any particular drop size, brands?
Ha maybe when its time for the scrap :hehe:
    Thats an idea :baby:
I think i have a haynes somewhere in the loft must have a look.

I was tempted to go over all the scatches and rust but wasnt sure about colour matching. I like the idea of getting a compressor but alway thought you needed a garage or booth to do a proper job.

well might have a trip down to halfords tomorrow see what there is, then have a go a rust picking at the weekend, if the weather aint too bad.

Yeah, you really do need a garage but you can get away with doing it outside if it's a still, warm, dry day (have fun finding one of those round here!)

Let us know how you get on.

    Right...

Chop 2 coils off each spring.
Spray the whole car in red oxide primer.
Fit 15" steel wheels from a Vectra or Cavalier.
    Fit a roof rack.
    Spray bonnet matte black.
    s t r e t c h the tyres.

    Sorted.

Most springs that are used for lowering cars are actually around 4 to 6 inches longer than standard springs with more coils to compensate for the reduced travel and also keep the ride bearable.

I think Penski post was a little tong in cheek :blah:

In some cases it can be dangerous in others its fine. Ive worked on load of cars where to coils could drop out of their seats if the car is jacked up (or goes over a large bump for that matter) Just wire them in.

Id do it but im not sure if you should do it if your not sure it will be ok.

hmmm......bet that makes it handle like a dream :eeek:

It costs like 60 quid for a lowering kit

Do the job properly before you kill yourself or someone else for that matter :duh:

    Roof Rack...

    www.cleaned.be - check the gallery ;)

Chopped springs are nowhere near as dangerous as a lot of people say they are...certainly not lethal. Just wire them to the cups and pigtail them is necessary. They tend to stiffen the ride a little too...

It's not as if he's going to be tearing the hell out of a mkII Ashtray around corners and so forth...
