ok i have this old HP computer (400mhz, probly 8-16mb video card, 128mb ram or somethin) so what can i do with it? i wanna mod it, but is there anything i can do with the components inside? (i dont want to upgrade this hard ware) so ya can i make a server for it? (if i make a server for a game, does the game have to be installed on it?) and with 400mhz, i cant really make a server for many new games now can i? so what can i do with it?
File servers; networked storage is a wondeful thing if you have two people constantly on the PC who like to use the same things
Thats basically what I just suggested; yes. Just enable network sharing of the hard drive, and allow people to write to the drive-assuming you have an operating system that allows hard drive sharing.
Im not sure, but I think you can do file sharing with windows 98; go ahead and give it a shot. All you need to do is right click on your hard drive and select properties; under there, there should be the option to share resources. However, I havent messed with 98 for over a year, so I cant be sure.
You can run WinXP in that, just turn off all the visual enhacements. One day I tried to run WinXP with 32MB, it refused to install, so I put more RAM, installed WinXP, took away the RAM to have 32MB again and WinXP booted without any problems. I have a PII 350MHz with 128MB and it doesn't have any problem with WinXP, give it a try.
I have three of the so so same and i just hook them up to the network fill them with cheap 2mb cache drives and use them as back up for all my stuff cause you never know when you'll end up with THE virus. Got one once, wiped off my 2 drives clean never again
I have one as well, a 586, 120Mhz 32-megs ram I thinks. Am about to toss it in the trash, after doing a 7X wipe on the 2-Gb hard drive of course. I don't need another whole PC for a firewall (got a Linksys for that), don't need a fileserver (no ISA ethernet card, and only a 2GB hard-drive anyway, HD is old+close to failure no doubt). Got a couple less-older PC's to play with Linux on if I want. I feel bad throwing it out, it works 100%, but nobody I can find wants it, who is near or will pay shipping for it. Even got a OEM Win95 disk for it too. -------- I got one idea I like: wipe+reinstall Win95, then put a wallpaper on that is a photo of yourself, and the lettering "[your name], [your contact info]" and the title "Director, Strategic Pornography Reserve". And then fill the hard drive 95% with porn movies and pics. Then pack it in a waterproof container, and bury the whole dam thing somewhere-- monitor, keyboard and all.
Drop on a copy of Unix/BSD/Linux and webmin? don't install the gui, make sure its got a network card, just run it as DHCP. Install Samba, BIND and you're done Alternatively install an FTP setup? ----> Better yet, get the computer, pull it apart, and use cool looking bits for mods?
I have a few old parts from previous upgrads. We have two pcs at home, one for me , and another for my brothers, my dad who is old fashioned, is learing to use the computer, and was thinking of making another old one. both the computers are linked by a router, and i have shared files from one another. So i can play mp3s from my brothers pc and vice-versa. Is this the same as a server??? If so, then i can make another crapy pc for my dad. Or should i just make a server? I think i have just confused my self
give it to the homeless to keep them warm?? bin them? give them to people who have a use for them? sell the parts? use the parts? make house hold uses with
Funny. Just a month ago I had to go scrounging around for an old WIN95 system in order to program PLDs with a freeware util that could only run under WIN95. Sometimes just leaving this stuff in the closet is more useful than anything else.
