I'm posting this in Open Source, because I want to make Open Source CDS. Any dremel/microwave/etc. related posts will probably just annoy some of the forum elitists....

    Anyway, on with the show:

I have about 75 blank CDs that a former employee left behind. I have no need for mere CD-R's (yay affordable DVD+R!) so I thought I'd burn some OS software. Any ideas on what I should include?

I'm gearing it towards windows users, but I might include Mac software too, if macs can read PC CD-R's.

Here's what I definitely want to include:
    • Firefox
    • Thunderbird
    • Open Office
    • 7-Zip
    • GTK+GIMP
    • blender 3d
    • GAIM (yeah, I prefer trillian as well, but it isn't open source)
    • X-Chat 2
    • Xvid codec

Any others I should throw on there?

I want to make sure it is all stuff that is easy to use, which is why I've excluded all the cool geeky stuff like PHP Apache etc.

    Not sure what to include.

    But!

Macs will read PC CD-R discs (they all use the same ISO standard). But Macs dont use .exe install files remember. Not sure what they use, but know they have a different setup/install procedure.

You'll have to have a copy of two versions on one version.

hmmm... you could go whole-hog & burn Linux liveCDs for people!

Ubuntu has a LiveCD distro; the CD images are available here.

I know there're other LiveCD Linuxoids, too.

But that might be a bit over the top, in which case I'd use the OpenCD Project folk's list of Win software!

... agreed, then maybe give some away to local schools and libraries, spread the word, man!

The problem with live CDs is I'm trying to reach out to the people who normally wouldn't use open source software... this is to be an intro to open source.

I figure if I can get them hooked, they might be more open to an open source operating system.

The open CD looks cool, the only downside is Firefox 1.0 (I want to keep it as recent as possible in case the users don't update often) But I may just not care and download the CD... better than re-inventing the wheel! (and I might just download the installer and make a new CD based on it.)

    Thanks for the link!

if you decide not to go that route, i've known a sunny day and bb gun to do some pretty cool stuff...

just to keep it on topic though: utilities... you can never have too many utilities
