Great, burned iso's and they work this time. Thanks RTT, next thing though is the partitioning.
I get 2 choices, automatic, or manual using druid. I chose manual.
first thing i get is choices of mount points, next is file system types. The next is size.
What i need to know is what the mount points need to be and one of the file types. One of the choices for file system types is swap, so thats one sorted, but how big should it be? What does the other need to be. What size should i use for the main partition? The max i have to play with right now is 9gig, after chrimbo ill be getting a 100gig drive with any luck. Having to survive on 30 is terrible.

    Thanks

if none of the above made sense, ill try to explain better if needed

ok you need a native partition and swap. make the swap about double the amount of ram you have is a rough estimate for size. Then make the separate native partition whatever size you want (obviously big enough to install whichever distro you're using) then youre set to go :)

Thanks but im still a bit confused, So ill be using 640 mb for the swap but what is the mount point? choices are

    /
    /boot
    /home
    /tmp
    /usr
    /var
    /usr/local
    /opt

Next, what is the partition for the actual install, im guessing /boot. but what is the file system type?
    choices for that are:
    ex2
    ex3
    physical volume (LVM)
    Software
    vfat

    thanks, sorrt for n00bness

    Alex

    Edit:
I found this link here for installing red hat 7.2, if i just followed this would it be ok, it looks almost identical...

Ok, i gave it a try using the redhat guide and when i click ok to create either partition, it says 'could not create primary partition' there is a button that say 'force to be primary partition' but windows is already there isnt it?
Im sure it just my stupidity..

Thanks for ur time and patience

Good luck with it all, -thebroken. It might be a steeper learning curve than windows but stick with it :)

I'd recommend getting something like knoppix that boots off a cd. That way you can get used to linux things a bit before you try and actually install anything! Also helps if you can get a more linux savvy friend to come round and help :D Failing that, try your local library- see if they have any decent books on linux that you can borrow. Its pretty hard going (I'm still learning stuff daily) but its worth it!
    Cheers
