I have the above graphics card.
My graphics demands are quite light. I only play Counter-Strike:Source and I'm enjoying the online play so much that I don't see myself buying another game for some time yet.
That said, I've noticed that when the gameplay gets intense it starts to stutter/drop frames which is disappointing. This only happens occasionally and is more of a minor inconvenience than a PITA.
Nonetheless, I figure it would be better if I upgraded my graphics card. I was thinking of a 6800 but I don't know if it will solve the dropped frames problem. Would I need to go higher?
I'm only interested in NVIDIA cards, btw.
With the above in mind, what upgrade should I look at?

I suppose you're like me then. Though I like to try thinks like Bioshock very occasionally, usually I'm on counterstrike, nfs most wanted or something else rather old school. I'd recommend the 8800GT or the 9600GT. Both similarly priced (around £100-120 on ebuyer) and both very capable. You could easily run some of the most graphically intensive games on there, though maybe not cranked all the way up.

What sort of money were u looking to spend?

£100-120? Yikes. That's how much I spent on my last PC! What about a 6800 or 7800?

Alright then... can't seem to find much 7800 or 7900 on t'internet shops, so I'd try eBay first. A good 7600GT/GST or 7900GS can be picked up for <£50 from eBuyer.

i honestly think either an overclock on the 6600GT you currently own, or hunting on ebay for a 7 series card.

the 7600GT is on par with the old 6800GT in terms of performance, a 7600GS is slower but you wont notice it and there very cheap atm.

i had to replace a dead 6800GT that i loved, i had to make a quick purchase and shudder all the way home with a 7600GS, i hated the thought of owning such card, but it fired up and handled COD2 very well.

find a 7600GS or GT and be happy!

I have an old 7600GT and I ran CoD4 on it for a long time without any problems.

Which gfx card interface do you have? AGP or PCI-e?

i suggest putting in extra RAM to bring your self up to 2GB memory if you don't already have it.

If you have a PCI express and SLI enabled PC i have an old gigabyte 6600GT i'd sell to ya.

I know you don't want ATI but apparently the old X1950XXX (or some bizarre name like that) are good bang per buck

There's a PCIe NVIDIA 7800GTX 256MB on ebuyer for £55 incl. VAT and delivery.

While the price is more down my street, what's really tempting me is the promise of "unparalleled performance". Performance without parallels sounds good to me as I don't have a Mac. But will I really experience the "supercharge gaming" I'm lead to believe comes with this card?

Compared to modern cards? Probably not. Compared to your current card? Certainly. For games like CSS, FEAR, Oblivion - games around 2006. I upgraded from a 6600GT to an 1900GT, which has about equal performance.

In graphic card sector there really is no "unparalleled performance" - and if there is then it lasts for about two weeks.

Good grief yes, you'll notice a difference going from a 6600GT to a 7800GTX! Tell you what though, go an extra tenner and go for the 7900GT.

Hay I'm also in need of a new card, preferably XFX and future prof upgrade capable of running the latest UT game.

Future Proofing is never a good idea - 1 year later and the new budget card will be as fast as the high end card, and you'll have spent less buying a new card a year later (the old one will still probably be adequate) than you would buying a high end card.

Having said that, a 9600 GT would probably be a fair card to go with.

Here's a link showing performance comparisons of your current card verses the 7800GTX and 7900GT. Note there are two 7800GTXs listed with differnet clock speeds and unfortunately ebuyer doesn't list these on those items.

I would go ahead and buy either, they should both run CS with ease and be much faster than your current GPU. I would also heed the advice of adding to your RAM, it's so cheap these days to get 2gb and it does make a difference.
