I've got a 2x16 EL backlit LCD that I removed from some junk PCBs along with a tiny little inverter. The inverter module is about 2cm x 1cm and has 3 pins, one labelled VO (voltage out?), one G (ground?) and another one that has a capacitor covering the label (voltage in I assume). The question is how much voltage should I put into the little fella as I don't have any specs for it? I thought about starting at 5v and working up seeing how it went...?

Also, is EL sheet polarised or can you wire it up either way?

    Try the 5V first.

Remeber that the inverter raise the voltage for 5V to some thounsands volt to light the EL, so keep your fingers away of the Output

CCFL inverters outputs thousands of Vs.
    El inverters are much lower.
My EL inverter outputs at normal 110V so while not being thousands would still give a nasty kick.
