Ok so a little background to this question. I recently graduated college with a degree as computer technical support specialist and upon moving back to my small/medium sized hometown of 25,000 people Its been nearly impossible to find a job that i can put my degree to work. I like my hometown and i know theres work here. I do a lot of computer work on my own so i can make a living and im currently in the process of purchasing a home.

Today i get a call from a tech company in a town over three hours away that wants to offer me a position but i would have to move there. I dont think im willing to relocate for a job at this point. I would be paid $30 an hour but the cost of living in this city is much higher and the city is over 200k people so not something im willing to move to when i dont know anyone that lives there and i would be leaving all my friends, family and gf of 3 weeks. I dont know what to do becuase i may never get the job i really want here but i dont think im ready to give up all my friends for a life of solitude like i did for college. any advice?

Well, I'm not sure how good $30 an hour is (£17/hr, seems quite good), it depends whether you are willing to set up your own company in your home town, but there are risks and costs involved. Have you searched for a job in your home town, get some professionals to help?

I would ask if you can do a trail for a while to see if you like it?

Yeah pretty much every business in my town has a need for tech support but none of them are willing to pay even somewhat competitive or reasonable rates so they automaticly assume its best not to make an offer. Hell im working for 8.25 an hour here right now doing customer service for 8 hotel brands and i would accept the same thing to be doing computer work. I know i should be make much more with my degree but i really like this area. Every place in town has my resume just about theres a few new places that i need to write up a new cover letter for so that will be done soon.

I'de consider the move, its not like you'de be moving half way across the country. You said your making 8.25 right now, and thats a 30$ an hour job, thats -alot- of money if it is a 40hour a week job.

If you ever get homesick you could always just make a 3 hour drive into your hometown and take a visit for a day or two, its not that far. Although you said the cost of living is high down there, how much higher than where you live?

Is there a town in between? if there is then chances are its a small town. That way you would have 1-2hour commute to work and a 1-2hour trip to visit your family/friends/gf. You could stay a couple of months to a year until you know some people in the large town, then move over there permanently.

Or live in the city during the week and in your home town at the weekends, lots of people do it.

    Just a couple of suggestions.

    I like this idea :)

With all due respect, it sounds a bit like you aren't the sort of person who makes friends easily based on what you said about your college days. Otherwise I would have said that I would move to the city, if it was me.

I think you might be really limiting yourself if you stay, unless you get really lucky with a job in your home town.

When you say that the jobs there don't pay well, is that a case of needing to work up the corporate ladder (shudder) to make good money, or is it just not going to happen?

It seems a shame to waste the time and effort you have put into your qualification by not putting it to good use.

Remember that if you do go for the big move that you will meet a lot of new people in the job and you might end up making loads of nice new friends (and possibly some bad ones ;))

What type of job is the one you were offered. Is it phone tech support, or will you be a support technician?

Also you may want to consider what else might come with the job. Does it include benefits, Health coverage, vacation. Also is it Salary, or hourly wages, what type of pay scale do they have...etc

well from what i know about the position i would be an actual tech person who goes around assumingly the office making sure all the systems are find and dandy for other employees and then clients as well.

Id say the rate of living is about 20-30% higher than here before taxes hit. Im right now waiting to hear the final results on the house i was going to buy here for $50k. The house of this style and size and quality would easily go for 90k min in this new city. There arent really any midway towns bigger than 100 people between here and there either so a go between is kind of out of the question in terms of finding places to shop for food and even computer stuff.

I like the idea of a high speed train, i would easily take the job and sit in a train for half an hour to get back to home :D Somehow i dont think that will happen.

Good friends are always hard to come by but when i do make close friends with people they are really close friends. It would take a while for me to get to know many people in the new place too just becuase i am very quiet at first and not very outgoing in the sense of meeting people unless i have to for work.

The place where im working right now and im trying to get into their tech dept by moving up the corporate ladder but its far from easy. Im definately qualified for the spot but they post a wanted ad and then they say they are only seeing who will apply like the god of all employees might fall into their lap. Corporations suck balls though thats for sure.

I do feel like im wasting my talent by not doing what i love to do or was trained to do but at the same time a dream job to me is more than doing what you love to do. you need to be able to do that in a place you want to do it too.

I think the biggest thing thats making me scared of what may happen is 1. the girlfriend. We have only been dating a month but its one of those relationships that you know will last for a long time. I would feel horrible trying to put up a long distance relationship. 2. im loosing the last few years i will have with my close friends that i know will be leaving in the next two or three years.

I have great benefits where im at and benefits are offered at the new place. Pay is salary and im not sure on the pay scale yet.

Am i stupid for thinking that i might be able to get a job that i want by staying here? How many of you are actually doing what you love to do or what you have wanted to do? Anyone living their dream?

Well after working at over the phone tech support, and network monitoring, I've finally scored a job that comes close to my dream job. I'm a support technician supporting two offices, I get to do software troubleshooting, and a bit of developing work. Also I get to play with new hardware, as I do all the ordering for the offices in this province. And best of all it's Government, so I get decent benefits, and good stability. The only thing that would make this better is if I made more money. I make about $17.70/hr canadian. Personally I'd love to get a job making $30/hr. Moving's not a problem for me really, since I'm from a military family. I actually had to move about three hours away from where I worked last for this job.

Personally if I could score a job with a starting salary of $30/hr I'd probably move almost anywhere. (preferably somewhere tropical :thumb: )

Dude, move, and visit on the weekends. That sounds like a pretty sweet job offer you got, and if it's salaried, it almost certainly comes with benefits. Besides, it's only 3 hours. I used to drive over 4 to visit my gf at the time. Plus, it sounds like you have a much higher advancement opportunity with the new job. I'd seriously consider taking it. Even if you don't like it, you can always tell them to FOAD and move back.

I think you next to step up a level and make new friends, nothing wrong with that just some casual ones would make your new work environment and who knows it might be better than you think.

You only live once, try the new job environment! I would definately go for it, if not you can always return to your home town..

Take a train, the hick town i'm going to college is filled with commuters, they all take the train into the big town an hour away, out here houseing is dirt cheap, and but just an hour away is chicago. you should be fine, just make sure you don't have to get up at like 4 am to get to work at 9 am

In my opinion its best to move around and take jobs all over to move up when you are young. Then when you are older, perhaps with kids, you can stay in one place and have a good job there, and not have to worry about that sort of thing. Perhaps with some experience it would be easier to get a job in your home town, or you could get transfered to a town you like more (depending on the company)

Its better to regret something you have done than to regret something you havnt done.

Condsider if you do take the job then:
    * Either it works out fine and you have a great time and you enjoy returning to your friends at weekends. In which case: yay!
    * Or, you hate it, the city is smelly and noisy, your flat is small and messy, your co-workers are jerks, your boss is a sweaty unpleasant pig. In which case you can just say screw you guys and return to from where you came.

Noe condsider if you do not take the job then:
    * Either it works out fine, you get paid more and more and its fun.
    * or you dont get any job, you split up with your GF you wished you had moved to the city, but they already filled the slot.

    City sounds better tbh.
