first off, whats the best? then one i can afford. I tried just finding one that is by a good brand, but then all the DVD-RW and DVD+RW got me confused. is there one that will write to DVD+R/RW, DVD-RAM, and any others i forgot? if there isn't a DVD burner that will work on any format, what formats will be useful, and which will i never need?
you will definitely use dvd-r because they work in all dvd players, dvd+r is hardely ever needed. the same issue exists with the -rw and +rw's. i use a sony DRU-530A. so far no problems with copying dvd's or burning them, and works really fast, take about 15-20 minutes to burn a completely full dvd-r.
but those DVD's were originally recorded by you... riiiiiiight? they were just videos from vacations at the beach, christmas present openings, and the like; not Bad Boys 2. whats a top-of-the-line model?
I've got a few magazines on hand: Maximum PC : Plextor PX-708A ($170 @ newegg) PC World : 1) Plextor PX-708A ($170 @ newegg) 2) Lite-On LDW-811S ($90 @ newegg) 3) Kano Technologies K8Xtreme ($114 @ directron; not at newegg) PC Magazine : Editors' Choices: - LaCie d2 DVD+/-RW (external; about $215) - Plextor PX-708UF (external version of 708; about $250) - TDK 8X Indi (about $160) The verdict seems to point to the Plextor drive. But if you want to keep it cheap, look at the Lite-On drive. Lite-On is supposed to make very good drives, though I haven't read any reviews of this drive. Hope this helps
What are you going to be doing with this drive??? Me I am all about movies - thats the WHOLE point of owning my DVD burner. Drop over to www.dvdrhelp.com and go to the DVD player compatibility list. Find out what your DVD player supports and buy accordingly. I waited around and found a deal at OfficeMax - picked up a drive for $69 after rebates. Its a no-name 8x DVD+RW but I have yet to burn a coaster and all my discs play like a dream. Sony dual format burners are good units so you cant go wrong with those either.
Actually, the police tend to not know what piracy is Its the RIAA (speaking of: I got 50 of these badboys the other day ) and MPAA (no, not this MPAA) who tend to frown
Actually I am the poilce (officer that is) but thats another story. You guys are correct in guessing that in average small town America we dont even bother with people - its harder to catch and well we really dont care. Would you rather have your neighbor building a meth lab or a DVD duplication machine - you gotta make priorities. Name one person that has been killed or injured making CDs and DVDs......now illlegeal drugs...hmmm - see my point. The fact the RIAA is treating it like its the scurge of American pisses me off. DVD and CD piracy hurts the rich - drugs, robbing etc hurts every day "normal" people at a far greater rate. Almost everyone can name someone strung out on drugs or involved/victim off violent crimes - any of you guys have friends that lost a few thousand/million due to piracy.....a few could I guess but unlikely. I personally would quit my damn job if the board of directors where I work told use we had to cut money from our current program to start enforcing bull shat piracy laws.
LG make a triple format DVD burner if that's really what you want. It'll burn DVD+R & DVD-R at 8x, DVD+RW & DVD-RW at 4x, DVD-RAM at 3x, CDs at 24x, and CD-RWs at 16x The model number is GSA4082B Newegg have it here for around $100
NEC 8X Black DVD+RW/-RW Drive, Model ND-2500A, OEM Bulk only $84.99 write speeds: 8X DVD+R, 4X DVD+RW, 8X DVD-R, 4X DVD-RW, 32X CD-R, 16X CD-RW
thats right, stop arresting people like Ted Bundy to get those damned dirty Jaywalkers! (do that last part like Charlton Heston) When you get a DVD burner you should get an eyepatch and a pegleg, deluxe models should also include a parrot. TekMonkey, I want one!!! IanW's suggestion looks cool, with the DVD-RAM capabilities, and Monkeyspank's suggestion is really fast. but how do you flash the firmware, do i expose myself to the drive and say "work faster or I'll do it again!!!"? well, if it must be done... [unzips pants] this better work...
that is one way there is also a lesser known and slightly more unorthodox method.. you download the appropriate file from here , unzip it and follow the fairly simple instructions. Then you have a region free drive which can rip at up to 12X which is much more fun than the factory standard 2X. The pioneer is happy with pretty much any brand of discs. but even so, stick with Ritek G04 dye ones anyway. I cant recommend this drive and these discs enough. I've burnt over 300 discs, these riteks will play in anything.
well, a parrot might make me more popular with the ladies but those stickers are pretty fly (thats retrospeak for b*tchin) **************************************** well, i think monkeyspank's the winner... or has anyone burnt 301 discs? is that 300/300 successful? will they work in a PS2? thats what i use for DVD's ********************************************* I'm kinda scared now, i think my computer is actually running a little faster
http://www.mwave.com/mwave/skusearch.hmx?SCriteria=AA25990 cheaper and reliable site (I've bought from them numerous times)
i have made a few coasters but that was due to a problem with nero and virtual drives. Basically I installed alcohol 120 onto my system which creates a virtual drive. Shortly afterwards I started getting "invalid parameter" errors in nero resulting in dead disks. This is the only thing that has ever forced me to reinstall winXP. the only burning progs I have now are nero, blindwrite and dvd decryptor. if you do want to backup your home movie DVDs then get DVDshrink and Nero 6.3. Check www.doom9.org for all the info you need. ---edit-- - yes, that link is the item you want, but dont bother with the bundled software. The 107 is the OEM version of the A07. Same drive entirely, just without screws + nero.
Yeah... I'm gonna stick with the OEM, it's $56 cheaper!!! now what software should i use? my ex's dad used DVD-X-Copy to keep a backup of his DVD's (thats true, he was all paranoid about burning DVD's he rented) but it would only record the movie part, not anything else. is there a program that will make an exact copy of the disc, including the Audio options ,special features, and all that other good stuff that only freaks like me use or look through.
