Well we'll find out when it comes back now. It will be heartbreaking and also will leave me quite significantly out of pocket. Great. I'm hoping from the description of the fault that the bloke has given that it will be salvageable and that he's just being a moron.

Still very much in limbo with my car/insurance stuff...

Notified finance company it was deemed a write-off, they were very nice about it all - just said to continue making payments until they receive payment, which they will refund when they do, gave me the document providing the early settlement figure and said to give it to Admiral and the GAP providers so they can clear it all up.

Had to contact the dealership I bought the car from to find out who the GAP was with, sent them an email to give them a heads up a claim is incoming. Not heard back yet, but to be fair, it's not like they can actually do anything until they know what they have to pay out.

Hoping to go scour the local small car dealers this weekend and pick something up cheap as possible so I can actually get to/from work next week!

Ditto @Wakka. I'm still waiting for my insurance to come back and make a settlement offer on my bike. I can't start bike shopping yet because I don't know how much I'm going to have left over for a deposit (if any) on my next bike. I should end up with a couple hundred, but I won't know for certain until they pull their finger out.

I called my gap insurer a week or two ago and the instruction they gave me was: let the insurance deal with it first; when they offer you a settlement get it in writing, do not accept it, and then call us.

    It's a ballache, aint' it :/

I got a response back from the GAP guys a couple of hours ago - same as you, they say to gather up copies of paperwork (finance agreement, V5, certificate of motor insurance etc) while waiting for the settlement valuation, then pass it on to them before accepting so they can argue it as much as possible.

I currently have 5/11 pieces of the documentation they want... yay.

It's annoying because I know, providing everything gets sorted as it should, I will actually be better off financially once I get through this inconvenient stage (my finance was at quite a high APR, as I didn't have a particularly good credit score when I bought the car, and I would have had 2 years left of it to go).

Yeah it was quite lucky that the bike was so new - I had all the documents on my desk, ready to read through the fine print. Ended up having to send them ~30mb of photos of documents...

The <100 mile old alternator I fitted has **** the bed. It was not a fun job to do while the subframe was out of my Saab, its gonna be f-ing murder to do with it in. I am not a happy bunny right now.

Also, to top it off, my dad's Jeep is off the road while were waiting for a new-to-it fuel tank skid plate to arrive so neither of us has transport at the moment.

Ah... Excuse me eBay, but: NO, F- OFF.

I haven't allowed offers because I don't want constant notifications all day when some cheapskate tries to offer me ~30%-50% of the asking price. I listed a 2-month old mint condition iPad with free unused headphones and case for £260 recently; despite offer notifications going off pretty much all day I never had a single offer anywhere close to that - the highest I had was £160 and the lowest was £80.

No, this item isn't selling because it's a fairly specialist piece of kit and I'm not offering shipping - I am not allowing offers when I'm already selling it at a bargain price. Get to f- mate.

IanW hit the nail on the head.

If I had space I'd buy one, but alas not.
