Go into the attic, poke a brolly through the hole and open, find urchin to hang on to it until roofer arrives.

Ace Combat 7 update tomorrow, just when you think you've escaped... also, game is two years old now, that snuck up out of nowhere.

Bums. 's only had 140 power-on hours, too - but then again it was shucked from a USB caddy and has been on a pretty aggressive spin-down cycle. It's literally only just started dying, though, because I've got a status report from yesterday which says 0 pending sectors.

Guess I'm in the market for a new 2TB drive!

Successfully bolt-modded my IBM Model M keyboard (a thread, along with ~5 YouTube videos, is on the way!) only to discover that 11 of the springs - in addition to the ton of rusted springs I've already replaced - are duff and need to be replaced. I also screwed up the spring/spacer placement for RShift and NumPad0.

This has been one hell of a fiddly job so far...

At least now the main keyboard assembly is bolted together which will make for a much simpler disassembly process... It's just not something I'd planned to be doing again for a long while!

    Waaay ahead of you

The only parts of this keyboard that have not been washed & scrubbed are the membrane and controller. It's been my keyboard for a while though, so at least most of the accumulated gunk is my gunk!

Guess it was overdue a replacement...

    upload_2021-1-20_14-4-52.png

Yup, the warranty expired in 2013. Pending sectors is up to 112 now, so it's a good job the new drive has arriven and a btrfs replace is in progress.

I wonder how mine is doing...

Ah, seven years of uptime, almost 20 billion revolutions. What a champ.

Noice. The OS drive in this server has 60,828 power-on hours and zero pending or reallocated sectors; the other 2TB in the mirror, an Hitachi DeskStar, has 61,406 with again zero errors. Though we'll have to see if it makes its way to the end of the btrfs replace operation without any trouble, of course!

Getting back into D2 a bit on the PC. Runs smooth as butter on my machine (3950x/2070 Super) yet is a stuttery low FPS mess on my wife's machine (3600x/5700). Also by stuttery I mean constant 1-3 second pauses during camera movement... Framerates are in the mid 40's at 1080 vs my machine 100+ at 1440p... Something not quite right there!!!

Doing some research and it looks like the latest patch designed to "improve PC performance" has utterly tanked framerates and introduced stutter primarily on the AMD side. Note - this is on top of Beyond light generally crapping all over framerate in general on all sides.

The only AMD GPU driver we have found so far to bring the performance back up to par is 20.4.2. Slight problem however in that the game refuses to launch 4 out of 5 times attempted (the dreaded Navi Blackscreen issue). This isn't an issue on newer drivers but they all exhibit the framerate issue above.

For now I have installed my old Trusty Kepler Titan in her machine and hilariously it is outperforming the 5700 (granted at slightly lower settings) by around 50% whilst also having no discernible stutter.

Hopefully a fix will be introduced soon but knowing Bungie it will come at the cost of sunsetting half of the remaining content....

EDIT: Managed to bodge a fix for now by using driver 20.4.2 and triggering a volume change via keyboard shortcuts if a black screen is encountered. Saw this little tip online and it works! :)
