I bought a load of rubber USB-C port covers a while back and they are so handy for preventing this exact situation. Don't even notice they're in.

There was a time (early-ish USB-C implementations) when a lot of mobile phone manufacturers used cheap, and now proven to be crap quality, physical USB ports. Nokia with their 5.x and 7.x lines are a prime example of that. The ports would simply stop working after 3-12 months.

You know, for all the **** that Apple get over the Lightning cable/port, I have very rarely heard of a Lightning port failing through normal use. They can be physically damaged, shorted out by dodgy cables, clogged up with dust & gunk (although your pockets must be pretty minging for that to happen)… but I’ve never heard of one failing simply through normal use. Compare that to all the shoddy USB ports seen on mobile devices… Even Type-C shares the same poor mechanical design.

Why the hell would you put the protruding plug in the device’s socket rather than on the cable?! Plugs are subject to increased mechanical stresses and wear, so put the plug in the inexpensive cable instead of the socket on the expensive device! Even HDMI and DisplayPort do it the “wrong” way round and it absolutely baffles me…

Edit: not a dig at anyone, just a rant about modern connector/cable design…

well it'll charge... glacially... using the fast charger...
and on the pc it's gone from doing nothing to windows going 'device not recognised'...

If it is moisture damage then, given i've not left the house in *mumbles* it just shows what a damp-ridden shitpit this flat is...

I had a Nokia phone where the usb port went. Data connection failed first, and power went shortly after.
Sent it in for warranty repair, which was rejected because "water damage". It'd been nowhere near any water, other than general northern UK humidity.

    Never buying another Nokia.

A lot of phones have a separate daughter board for the usb port, if you're comfortable opening it you may be able to repair it relatively cheaply. Subject to sourcing parts.

I lack neither the tools to open it, nor the dexterity to **** around with the ribbon cables commonly employed.

My wife had a failed early pregnancy and during the medically induced "cleanup" afterwards yesterday, she took strong painkillers. She lost a lot of blood and then threw up multiple times. At some point, she called me into the bathroom because she felt her blood pressure dropping. When I arrived, she lost consciousness and had a, luckily short and weak, seizure. We called an ambulance and she's now in hospital, staying until tomorrow (Monday) to finish the procedure. She's a lot better already and the people here are taking good care of her.

I'm going on a 4-day business trip to the Netherlands tomorrow morning.

    Great timing...

Currently sitting next to her, chatting about random stuff. It's mind-numbingly boring in any hospital, so I'm trying to keep her company for a while. It's tough on me mentally, though. Both of my parents died in this hospital years ago, and I spent way too much time here over the years (cancer/tumors and their respective treatments). A lot of memories coming back.

    Wow dude, that's not great.

Not my place to say and I'm sure it's on your mind, but frankly, I'd consider binning the business trip.

We (my wife and I) are talking it over already, and I'll likely go because she seems fully recovered (her own evaluation) and I have some very important things to do in our headquarters in my new roles (started two weeks ago).

If she says anything to the contrary during the day or evening today, I'll cancel the trip. I'll do that even if she just hints at something that might be off still. My wife's more important than anything at work. Always.

Holy crap, sorry to hear mate. Hope your wife is physically on the mend soon, I'm sure mentally it will take time. For the both of you.

I nearly lost two of my friends when they had children - it doesn't seem to be uncommon for it not as straight forward as we're led to believe and friends and family have also sadly lost pregnancies early on.

But, yeah, hope you and the wife can manage ok with it all and she's not kept in hospital too long.

So sorry to hear that @perplekks45, you both have my huge sympathy having been through that twice.
We had early failed pregnancies before each of our kids.
Very upsetting and distressing, and awful for Mrs P to go through.
It's not a straightforward process and still fraught to the end. My 2 are now 22 and 19, with different problems to work through in that time.
Feeling helpless as a partner when your other half is suffering and you can't help isn't easy either.

Another ebay vent I'm afraid guys. Sold a Arlo Q plus to daft old gent. He's claiming he phoned arlo and the conformed it not working, but I didn't reset it before dispatch so I have his full face and video evidence that it was working on arrival. he's submitted poor feedback and opened up a case. I can't even get the feedback removed on time for the offer on sellers fee. Very annoyed as the conversation history is me offering assistance and him replying to questions saying I don't know how. I said to him you may need to split the router Frequencies so 2.5ghz and 5ghz are separate. (Don't know how but won't supply router details to tell him how) even offered a video call and was told by him to stop messaging him it's broken.

Business trip cancelled, we learned today that my wife will need a small surgery. I will be there for her, and that's the most important thing right now.

TBH I think it will be good for you as well as her, the best choice you can make in a bad situation.

I hope it all goes smoothly and you're both back home soon.

For Nobbers like that it's always easier to provide a return lable, take the hit on the postage and get the shite back to sell again. If he's too dumb to make it work you can't help him, best to get it back and check the serial numbers.

    Or...
You can really mess with him by sending him pictures of himself and threaten him with small claims for lying...
    ...actually don't.

Don't forget to look after yourself too, you may not realise it now but you'll need to work through it.
We lost our first in similar circumstances, and even now nearly 30 years later I still catch myself wondering / playing the 'what if' game.

Sounds awful. We also had failed early (though earlier than yours) pregnancies.

Glad to hear everything's improving, and you wouldn't have been able to concentrate on that trip anyway.

We avoid even driving past the hospital my wife's mum died at.
