Many hours spend last night troubleshooting my Server only to find this when changing CPU's:

No idea how it happened unless it was always like that and has only just failed. Whole machine turned off whilst I was idle in the bios checking something out (remotely). Tried everything I could find online and all the normal troubleshooting steps but nothing made a difference (Bios Reset, Multiple PSU, different RAM, re-seated CPU, In/out of case etc). No post to VGA or PCI-E GPU and will not start via IPMI. Board is getting power but the socket itself appears to be dead.

Need to have another look today with better light but a quick glance with a magnifying glass looks like is not recoverable with my tools / eyesight (the pins are sooooo small compared to LGA 1150/1200).

Now I either need to source another SP3 Epyc board or bite the bullet and "upgrade" to a Threadripper build (or sidegrade / switch to a full blown blade server).

Oof… That looks like a dense set of pins, not sure I’d take that on either…

Is it worth seeking out a replacement board?

Left my effing rucksack at home this morning (I work away from home during the week). That means no laptop to play Netflix, YouTube etc in the evenings.

Also, my lunch for today is probably going to be pretty ripe when I get back to it on Friday.

Being on a tech forum (and yourself being a bit handy) I'm sure you know this, but when a penknife blade won't do it, apparently one of those mechanical pencils will. Push/pull the lead out of the metal tip and use it as a socket of sorts to coax the pin back into place, so I'm told. Not actually tried it myself as the penknife has always sufficed, but might work if you've a steady hand...?

I can't find exact replacements on Ebay but they are north of £300. Whilst cheaper than a Threadripper replacement build I am on the fence whether I would want to spend that much just for a replacement (especially when the device is not mission critical).

Yep, repaired a number of LAG sockets over the years, most recently a LAG 2066 but this thing is something else when it comes to the size of the pins, at least to my eyes (they look somewhere around half the size of the pins on LGA 2066 but much tighter spaced). I will borrow the magnifying glass I have at work (not a hand held one which is all I have at home) to see if I can get anything into the gaps between pins. Worst case I completely knacker it but its already presenting as knackered anyway sooo...

Let me know if you want an extra pair of hands/eyes on it... You do postage and I'll give it my best OCD attempt, no guarantees, "all else fails" option.

What have you got to lose by trying? An already dead board? Go for it!

Well I successfully managed to fix the pins using the magnifying glass from work but sadly no dice. Barring the CPU fan spinning and BMC kicking into life the board otherwise shows no sign of life. Power LED (LED1) isn't lit suggesting something amiss with power. Currently have it on my test bench with a known working PSU thus I know it isn't that. CPU is also cold after 10 mins of the board being "on" further suggesting no power at all, at least not on the 12v line.

I thought my life sucked until I read the last few pages of this thread! But seriously I wish all those fighting health issues be it themselves or friends and family a positive outcome.

Hold tight - it's not the CPU that's died, is it? Have you got a spare or can someone sub you one for testing?

Yep tested with both the 7551 and 7402 Epycs (both known working before the issue started - unless they have both died as well). Also tested with different kits of RAM in different slots.

Balls. And the PSU definitely powers up a different board using the 8-pin lead?

    Funtimes.

Had that done when I was 15 and was similarly rushed in before it burst.

Hope you're not stuck in there too long.
