Fine, if you have a high temperature but otherwise feel up to working do not go into work, if you have any of the other symptoms and feel up to work then go in, so sayeth the NHS.

Unless you live in Scotland as their NHS says stay at home full stop.

Man, they always get the best NHS advice north of the border. Free prescriptions, too!

I'm happy enough prepaying, it saves a fortune the older I get.

This is idiotic! If you infect the rest of the office, that's a huge amount of cost applied to the business! If anyone comes in vaguely sick to our office, that get forcefully asked to go home and rest! I dunno, fells like a toxic work mindset to me, let people be people, we're not robots!

My post that you've quoted are basic facts, if you find them idiotic that's your opinion and you're wrong, but lets assume that you mean my opinion of going in sick is the idiotic part not that you're already contagious by the time you present symptoms and go from there.

Not if the rest of the office is still able to work at a productive level

Now that's a huge amount of cost applied to the business, but please feel free to go back and read my first post on the subject, pay close attention to what I wrote "Depends on the severity of the symptoms"

Toxic work mindset? maybe, hell probably even, fortunately for everyone else I can only apply my standards to myself, I turned down positions where I could apply it to others.

Yup, the amount of people that come into the office coughing and spluttering and openly talking about how rough they feel I find mad.

No idea why they do it to themselves and others around them, usually its "Oh well I'd feel guilty staying home"... but you don't feel guilty spraying me with snot for the entire afternoon!?

    2 words - "Bradford factor".
The algorithm HR departments use to count sick days against a worker's chances of continued employment.

Our office is a known petri dish thanks to a draconian sickness policy and too many people of the above mindset wearing their lurgy as a badge of honour! It's got to the stage that I've opted to pay to get the flu jab every October, it is a bit odd queuing up with pensioners at the grand old age of 34 but keeps the serious germs at bay.

Half our department's on a verbal warning for 3 or more sickness periods in a 12 month span, it's just daft and shows they need to review their policy. You'd think a global pandemic would change things but apparently not.

Yesterday things were looking pretty dire. She was totally unconscious, no responses from her at all. We had the "do we keep her alive" conversation, which was hard.

Then they decided to take off her Parkinson's medication patch to see if that was affecting her. A neighbour visited her today and said she was awake, opening her eyes, and trying to talk. It's positive of course, but I'd spent days coming to terms with her not making it, and now I'm back to being terrified of her coming home. I couldn't cope before, even with 8 carers a day coming in. They're only free for 6 weeks, so the thought of having to do it again, but even worse is really upsetting. I don't want to lose my mum, but I also don't know how long I can go sitting with her 24/7 and not being able to close my eyes or turn my back. She tried to get my Dad (with dementia) to help her up whenever I left the room. They have enough savings to be "self-funders", but the cost of care is a LOT, so that would all be gone in a handful of weeks.

I just paid my credit card tonight, and after scraping together every scrap of savings and my PayPal accounts. I am left with a very literal 1p. It felt like a cruel joke. I hate that financial stuff is coming into this, but I guess that's what I get for existing during late-stage capitalism! :waah:

Bear in mind I’m using “you” in the general sense here, not “you” as in “I am singling out a specific person”.

It’s pretty simple as far as I’m concerned: if you know you’re feeling rough then you stay home.

    You
might have some slavish devotion to presenteeism, but it ain’t about you. It’s about whoever else you’re going to pass it on to, and whoever they’re going to pass it on to. What’s mild for you might be debilitating or even life-threatening for someone with health issues or a weakened/compromised immune system.

If you can work from home and you still choose to go to the office while you’re ill… yeah, I’m gonna shut up now, because Mr H will be bringing out the banhammer if I finish that thought “out loud”…

If you’ve been in a permanent full-time role (i.e. not contractor, short term, etc) for at least two years, then it isn’t all that bad. There’s a process to go through, and that process takes time. They can’t just toss you out on yer arse at will.

I know not everyone is in that position, but for a lot of people it isn’t all doom & gloom when it comes to time off for sickness.

The worry of paying for care is also something that is on my mind. My father was a well-to-do lawyer (boo!) before he retired, so he could afford to pay my grandparents' bills without issue. Me? Not so much.

Just had a ~2x2mm chunk break off a corner of one of my two top front teeth (right hand central incisor). I'm a nail biter, and was chewing on one of my thumbnails when I suddenly felt a little bit of grit in my mouth. Bit surprised as my dentist(s) have always commented on the excellent health of my gnashers, even if I've not kept them meticulously clean.

Ah well, none of the edges are dangerously sharp, and nothing's hurting. I realised I hadn't brushed my teeth yet, either, so did that, and nothing felt weird. Fortunately, I'm actually seeing my dentist friend (and his wife, who used to be his nurse :naughty:) this coming Friday, so may as well ask him to have a quick gander.

Just had to log in to do some work during my holidays, quick licence change for some software. Turns out the licence issuer has stuffed the allocations and now it is going to take most of the day to get that sorted out and I'm expected to just sit around waiting for them to sort out their mistake.
