Bear in mind I’m using “you” in the general sense here, not “you” as in “I am singling out a specific person”.

It’s pretty simple as far as I’m concerned: if you know you’re feeling rough then you stay home.

    You
might have some slavish devotion to presenteeism, but it ain’t about you. It’s about whoever else you’re going to pass it on to, and whoever they’re going to pass it on to. What’s mild for you might be debilitating or even life-threatening for someone with health issues or a weakened/compromised immune system.

If you can work from home and you still choose to go to the office while you’re ill… yeah, I’m gonna shut up now, because Mr H will be bringing out the banhammer if I finish that thought “out loud”…

If you’ve been in a permanent full-time role (i.e. not contractor, short term, etc) for at least two years, then it isn’t all that bad. There’s a process to go through, and that process takes time. They can’t just toss you out on yer arse at will.

I know not everyone is in that position, but for a lot of people it isn’t all doom & gloom when it comes to time off for sickness.

The worry of paying for care is also something that is on my mind. My father was a well-to-do lawyer (boo!) before he retired, so he could afford to pay my grandparents' bills without issue. Me? Not so much.

Just had a ~2x2mm chunk break off a corner of one of my two top front teeth (right hand central incisor). I'm a nail biter, and was chewing on one of my thumbnails when I suddenly felt a little bit of grit in my mouth. Bit surprised as my dentist(s) have always commented on the excellent health of my gnashers, even if I've not kept them meticulously clean.

Ah well, none of the edges are dangerously sharp, and nothing's hurting. I realised I hadn't brushed my teeth yet, either, so did that, and nothing felt weird. Fortunately, I'm actually seeing my dentist friend (and his wife, who used to be his nurse :naughty:) this coming Friday, so may as well ask him to have a quick gander.

Just had to log in to do some work during my holidays, quick licence change for some software. Turns out the licence issuer has stuffed the allocations and now it is going to take most of the day to get that sorted out and I'm expected to just sit around waiting for them to sort out their mistake.

Well, for safety, you should never carry washing again.

Stop wearing so many clothes, e.g. do you really need to wear socks on both feet?

You haven't considered the injuries incurred by refusing to carry the washing.

After trying to make sure Mum's nurses were aware I was not trying to get her rushed home, as it's free while she's there and the financial side is causing me so much stress. Mum's family has decided to keep trying to push her to be discharged to a nursing home as soon as possible! :grr: I'm absolutely terrified and have been on and off having one of the worst panic attacks of my life tonight when I found out. They both forget we're the only ones who aren't loaded, but also don't give a fig about me or my Dad. So if we end up on the streets after paying for Mum's care? Well, serves us right really I guess! I have 1p in my bank account and I'm not getting paid any time soon as I haven't been able to work since October. I always thought I was getting the family house in the wills, but apparently, it'll just be debt instead :waah:

Big F. Get in touch with the local council and see what they can do. When I worked in care homes there were a lot of residents who were at least partially covered, some through NHS too if it's required due to ill health. Call age uk, they should be able to help you through this and give advice.

Unfortunately my parents are in the **** position of not being poor enough to qualify for any funding, but also only just having enough that it would be gone in a couple of months and then they'd get into serious debt waiting until the funding could get cleared by the council. Mum's family think selling their house is just something I have to do and I should suck it up. Until I mention that we can't afford to stay in this area, so my choices are: move up North with both parents and none of them can visit Mum again, or, move me & Dad up North and we can never see Mum again.

Selling the house terrifies me for various reasons, one of them is if she clings on she'll easily eat through every penny of the money from that and I have no idea what we're supposed to do. Mum's family all have land and all have millions of houses. They cannot fathom that we don't have anything. They don't care about me ending up homeless. They think it'll serve me right for not moving out.

Partner misjudged the angle for the corner in the multi-storey and lost. Felt like it was a bit tight but didn’t expect impact on the rear near side of the car. Did I mention it was my car she was driving?

Dented door, dented wheel arch. Scraped right across both panels. I knew it would be bad, but when I got out to look my heart sank… absolutely gutted. Couldn’t be mad (cuz accident) but she burst into tears which made me feel terrible that she felt so terrible.

Booked in for three weeks time, will lose it for three days and £672. When I finally got home having sorted it out I had a text from Argos to collect my bright pink iPhone from Bury Argos. 200 miles away from me and they’d apparently used Klarna. Nothing has come out of my account but a swift call to both Argos and Klarna to make them aware this is certainly not me, definitely compromised my account but not sure how they paid as my Klarna doesn’t have it and my bank accounts seem fine.

Happy to see the back of 2024.

    Faaaaark!!!

I dropped my 3090 FE. Well, I accidentally knocked it off the dining table and it fell onto the floor.

No obvious signs of damage but it has crashed to desktop, after around 15 minutes of game time, three times immediately afterwards. Really hoping this is a coincidence and the result of some glitch, but I fear the worst.

Got home insurance? Definitely counts as accidental damage if it's stuffed.

    Hopefully it's all good though!

I hate work so much at the moment. It was already pretty bad but new manager is just awful.

I have Long Service Leave (Australian thing. Hit 10 years in the job you automatically get given 16 weeks of leave almost like a bonus. Can either just use it or get it paid out when you leave) coming up in April so just need to get that far, but the whole team is just teetering on edge of collapse.
