My mate in NSW texted me the other day from his pool when it was 36 degrees. But that was at 9PM.

    Stupid hot in that country.

Nottingham got hit somewhat variably with the snow. In some places there was almost nothing whilst down the road from there got a good load. Where I live we got about 8" which allowing for a little thaw just before dawn left us with 6-7" and as I had my laptop at home from working at home on Thursday, I took the advice sent to us by the UK H&S manager to not travel unless absolutely needed and worked from home.

Of course my manager lives in an area which was not hit nearly as much, only getting a light dusting to an inch or so. So, naturally he assumes that everywhere was the same and I get to "to be honest through, that's really not that much is it? I made it in..." Woohoo, good for you, have fun. Should be fun when we inevitably have a "catch up" sometime today...

We still had piles of ice and slush last night although a temperature of 9C this morning and a good bit of rain overnight meant that aside from a couple of tiny piles in corners, everything has gone now.

Wasnt able to swing an SSD in my recent upgrade as prices had gone up too much.

My SSD evidently took that personally and decided to die.

PC hung and restarted into UEFI... no SSD to be found...

    ****.

Yeah, was more mega ICY than snow for us down here but still just as bad. Even with decent tyres my cars absolute rubbish in meh weather. Road i go down for work which is a residential area had a 5 car pile up and i thought, ive made the wrong choice saying ill come in. I mean it went fine, drove cautiously, but yeah thinking it wasnt worth it, cause could have been something. Gonna start offering No as a service i think.

Everything keeps breaking. Coffee machine broke on Xmas morning. Replaced it and a week later that one is leaking. Then the throttle on my SIM pedals stopped working. Then the washing machine gave up. And finally the tubo on my car stopped turbo-ing.

I'm putting up with the coffee machine for now
I upgraded my SIM pedals and will sell the previous ones onced fully repaired under warranty
I replaced the carbon brushes on the washing machine and it's ok so far
I've bought a boost pressure control valve for the car as it's the most likely culprit - not yet fitted

Can't wait for the next thing!

Reseating the SSD seems to have fixed it for now.

My short-term memory seems to be getting worse, forgetting so many things recently. It's both frustrating and worrying.

My family history dictates I'll go that way. Makes me paranoid that it's already kicking in.

So after the sellers saying they'd negotiate on price they've changed their mind.

N number of weeks and extra surveys wasted.

On top of that the rescheduled Christmas trip due to flu is imminent and I'm now running a temperature.

    Absolutely effed off in general.

Well, that's utterly shite, mate. At least it's only flu and not man flu.

As a follow-up to my post back in December about a strangely negative review from company directors, I finally have an update.

Yesterday morning I was called into a meeting with HR and one of the directors, and he fired me on the spot. It all makes sense now! My best guess is that the company's finances are tanking, and there will likely be more firings to follow (sadly, the norm for the video game industry at this time). Grounds for my dismissal are laughably tenuous and vague, but because I've only been in their employ for 16 months I won't be able to pursue any legal action. Strangely, when I met with my boss in the afternoon he was pretty burdened about the whole thing, which surprised me because he was very much involved in the decision. Suffice to say I kept it professional.

I've been here before and it's by no means the end of the line, but damn it's a blow!

****, that is rough. But I guess you can take some comfort from knowing that it wasn't anything at all to do with your performance, and that you were just a victim of weak, cowardly management and cost-cutting.

I hope you can land on your feet and get a job with a company more deserving of your time and skills.

As an aside, I think it's disgraceful that in the UK you need to have been in post for two entire years before you are safe from what our US chums would describe as "at-will" dismissal.

Wow, that's pretty shitty behavior, regardless of financial pressure. Was that the strategy - tell em they're **** and not deserving of a pay rise and anyone who pushes back, Instead of meekly accepting, gets shown the door?

Good luck mate, I hope you find something else soon.

Is this anything to do with Ubisoft?

Thanks guys. @David nail on head man, that pretty much sums it up. They were reluctant to take me on in the first place, and I recently found out I was paid pretty darn well compared to a fair whack of the other devs, so it all makes sense now. And I agree @bawjaws it's ridiculous; there's no such thing as "job security" even if you have a permanent contract. I'm now pretty keen to get freelance work as it pays a lot better and is no less secure - actually, depending on certain jobs, it's arguably more secure.

And yeah Dundee has Rockstar (a very small part of it), and a good few smaller outfits, including my [former] employer.

    My back.

    My own fault.

Had some pallets of stock delivered to work and nobody even cracked them open by midday so I got annoyed and cleared half of it on my own. You know, show willing/ lead by example etc... nothing. By 3.30 nobody had touched the rest - "oh the truck will be back any moment, full of stock". Useless cnuts. So I got mad and moved the rest.

    Now I can barely move.
