I am going to buy a second hand phone for a friend in south america and I need to know what the best way to recieve the money from him is. I had thought of paypal but currently my account is suspended due to paypal being unfair and it probably wouldnt work for my friend in SA anyway. What other ways of transferring the money would be most the secure and cheapest.

    Thanks

Is it always? Isnt it quite expensive with local banks in other countries often? Do banks usually give good rates?

Transferring between countries is usually chargeable.

How about the scammers favourite method of Western Union?

Oh it may well do actually, I have never incurred one but then I don't transfer internationally that much.

Is Western Union a safe way to do it?

Moneygram aren't too bad. Their fee is around £8 for £100 sent. I used to send to my sister every week in South Africa and never had a problem.

International transfers will be CHAPS/SWIFT payments, charges vary, but it'll never be free.

Nochex or one of those other services that was competing with paypal?

It's pretty much PayPal, a credit card processor (for example Square), and otherwise banks do it via SWIFT or something comparable, as Krikkit already said.
