hi all ive just started oc'in , read up about it a fair bit so im not doin it blind , heres the deal .

Im running an Athlon xp2100 at 2600 , by putting the multiplier up to 16 and ive had to increase the cpu voltage to 1.7 to get it stable . i have 2 256 OEM sticks of pc2700 and a 512 stick runnin on aggresive timings . I have 3 case fans , 2 rear 80mm outtakes and a front 80mm intake . Im using a soltek sL-75frn2-L , with a whisper rock cpu fan/heatsink .

I get 49 degrees idle and around 53/54 degrees load . Am I goin to fry the cpu ? what do you guys recommend ?

thats not a bad temp, however, adding a side fan and maybe a blowhole would help cool things down a little more :D

Athlon XPs are rated up to 85°C or so before they start to melt, so you've got a bit of leeway before you do real damage, however that is a rather high temperature. Make sure your HSF is touching your CPU properly, with the right amount of Arctic Silver/whatever. That's the foremost problem with overheating.

Blowhole - Fan hole in the top of your case, the best place to have an outlet because that's where all the hot air congregates ;)

Best thermal paste, by general consensus is still Arctic Silver III - you should be able to pick it up on just about any overclocking website store.

the eddie_dane method for applying thermal paste - apply directly to chip (lil square in the middle of cpu for amd) with razor blade, just enough to cover completely. knocked 5 degrees off my temp doin it that way :D

The Arctic Silver's Ceramique is good too. Tests Ive checked out online show its about even with the AC III and plus its not electrically conductive.

That worked for me, added a blowhole and the temp went down, then added a side fan the temps went even more. Its worth taking the time and money in doing it.

Those temps are similar to mine so well done! (minie you yours is just a littel faster :()

I've u want to further your overclocking safely then i'd get a new HSF, like an Alpha PAL8045 aslong as you have the 4 mounting holes around the CPU socket. or get a Thermalright SLK800 or the newer 900.

You will see a better gain in performance if you overclock more by fsb. lower the multiplier and raise the FSB

u aint the 1st person to suggest usin the fsb to oc , if i try and raise it a significant amount with a low multiplier i cant get it anywhere near as fast . i think its summat to do with my OEM ram , 2*256pc2700 and 512pc2700 .

Just to jump in here, i'm having problems getting my FSB at anythin higher than 145 Mhz, windows 98 doesn't like it in the slightest... what should i do, i could clean install 98 onto a new partition, but that's a lot of work and i'd have to re-install everythin. So i'm planning to turn to multiplier oc'in once i get a Thoroughbred 2000 soon.

If that happened it means your overclock isn't stable :) I'd increase the volts or decrease the fsb slightly. (prob the fsb).

Btw, my system runs in the high 50's all the time without any problems. :)

    umm a few queastions really

1 i run a xp2500+ but when i take a look at the system spec, it shows 1900+ what does this mean?

2 i am underclocking my xp2500+ at the mo, but still getting 50C on load, i have got the sk7 heatsink and a ys 45 cfm fan. would these temperatures be caused because of the xp2500 running at high temps or what could it be?

3 about the cooling, if it is the proc, could you reccomend a good amd proc that runs low temperatures and also can be overclocked a bit?

4 if it isnt the fan, what else could i do to cool it? shall i put a 120mm 190 cfm fan onto the hsf with a 80-120 mm adaptor? thx for all the help everyone

    pc
