Some network cards come with pre-installed software which allows you to connect to a server to download the operating system on the machine.

Anyone know what this is called?

I think it's called Wake On Lan that turns the PC when internet connectivity to a certain MAC address. Ghosting software enables you to download an install image over the network without an operating system.

i think you mean the network boot feature. Im pretty sure it searches the network for servers running the network boot daemon and then starts sending files via tftp. About all i can remember from my dabble with it a while ago.

    Hope it help.s

edit: its called pxe boot!!! just remembered! :D

    Take it easy mate....

He's asking for help and just because you suggested something which is completely wrong and he knows that it's wrong doesn't mean you should go flaming away. Just chill. :thumb:

btw on topic, yes it's the network boot function. I don't need software on my PC to do it (built into BIOS or something) but you normally get a button to press when the PC is booting up.

PXE Booting is what you are looking for.

Allows the PC to boot off a network. If you card does not support PXE booting, you can also network boot off a floppy.
