It does seem to be progressive:
bird flu => swine flu... what's next? werewolf flu => man flu => t-virus?

We got a couple of well positioned old fortresses around here...
best to check HERE for a rough layout of it.
It's surrounded by open lawn planes, so gives lots of visibility. Add to that the fact that it's on top of a hill and withing 2 minutes run of most major shops.
There's a restaurant inside, meaning food supply is enough for a few days.
I would guesstimate it can house around 50, and would need 5 to defend, given weaponry.
They have old artillery standing on the grounds these days, that's been welded closed... nothing a bit of time and an angle grinder can't fix. Finding ammo for those might be harder though.
Stability wise, it was built in colonial times in order to withstand rioting locals. I reckon it's hold out against Zombies for a while.

Me and some mates have this one all planned out.
This fortress would be the short term target. Long term target is outside of town (about 40km), where we have an observatory on top of a mountain. One way up, one car wide, good spotting equipment, and on a farm... meaning food can be locally obtained, and guns and ammo are plenty around the house.
We reckon getting away from urban hotzones is the best one can do...

Weaponry wise, you're looking at anything from .22 rifles, all the way through 9mm pistols, 357 revolvers, to .228, 30-06 hunting rifles with scope.
Not the most hardcore arsenal ever, but seeing that most kids here grow up learning to shoot, i reckon we'd cope through sheer manpower and not having to show anyone how to re-cock a 9mm.

http://www.airpower.at/news03/0813_luftkrieg_ostmark/flaktuerme.htm Those buildings should be a target for anyone in Europe willing to hole up in a potentially busy area.

The Russians had trouble making an impression on 'em (And their "up to" 3.5meter thick walls) even with 203mm howitzers, so.. Should stand up to zombie hordes well. The doors would need to be modified to be big steel monstrosities that slide in from the sides, and the windows would want similar treatment. Big enough to 'farm' on the roof, and use a floor for generators. Be a mammoth operation, but hell, a structured group could pull it off.

I'd avoid it, but hey. It's one of the better looking options in the EU.

I know it's a bump from hell... but I've revised the Zombie plan...

    I recently bought this:

I have a Sainsburys Local under 200yds away from my house, and a larger Sainsburys about 3/4 mile away, very near to a Nettos and a Morissons

I think I'm sorted for food and transport... now what to do about weapons... A-10 anyone?

All you need is a secure shelter with loads of food. Wait out the zombies, and squish, they all fall apart after a month or two...

thats assuming zeke is following 28 days later rules, and good luck with having a strong enough perimeter. if they're going by z-day, or god forbid, romero rules you're gonna find yourself in a spot of trouble when food runs out and your fellow survivors start looking pretty tasty, in a sadly ironic way

I'd just ride around on one of these:

I'd like to see a zombie survive a shell from that up the nose!

Ah yes, the "Schwerer Gustav"... you gotta love big artillery. :D

Unfortunately you'd need a chaingang to lay dual railway tracks in front of the cannon to stay mobile, and considering the 30-45 min loading time it's not exactly the most effective weapon out there. However, if you're counting on it to have some deterring effect I guess we'll have to consider a zombie psychological study. I am quite sure, though, that one shell would be enough to clear out a good number of zombies from any horde, but then you'd be swarmed when working to reload the beast. Also, since it's not really effective at close range, I suppose you could use it for bombardment from a distance to clear out a city before moving in to mop up the stragglers.

Upon thinking about it, i would hole up in a university and conduct research.

Into plastic Armour and weapons, use the liquid nitrogen from a physics building to build freeze guns and broadcast via the internet my very own testing website. if our glorious allies the Americans haven't succumbed yet, they can watch from the comfort of their own internet and kindly donate to help helicopter or airdrop in new weapons or food. I would also build snatch and grab vehicles out of land rovers (useful, spacious and reliable) to rescue others, maintain a strict dont open closed doors policies and train my friends and I in close quarters melee, to rescue, rebuild, repopulate and most of all to preserve knowledge.

As we all know when things go noisy (involving guns) its best to just gtfo and used as a last resort.

As to the suitable building i believe smashing the first set of stairs and using a remote cranked set as a good idea for double security. Radios and earpieces are to be used for communication as well as examining new arrivals for bites is a good idea.
