Original Story This has been a recurrent, though largely under-the-radar, story the last couple of years. Business has been saying for some time that they need immigrint labor, legal or otherwise to continue to operate. This position tends to be born out by the economic numbers, unemployment is at extreemly low levels and a significant chunk of the American workforce, as much as 30%, is going to retire in the next decade. Being pro-immigrint is not a popular political position these days, but it is a business reality in much of the country.
Let's face it, if an American has to worry that an uneducated, illiterate poor illegal who doesn't even speak English is qualified enough to take his job from him, then that American is a loser of epic proportions. I wouldn't be outraged, I'd be friggin' embarrassed.
The immigration problem does not exist its one of the biggest cons in modern history. True it is foreigners taking our jobs but its ones in other countries who will work for nothing. But big business know that is most people realized this there will be such a public outcry that they will no longer be able to do business in western countries so it much better for them to scare the general public about immigration problems. Just any excuse to cover up the fact that big business are just a bunch of greedy pigs who doing nothing expect foe them selfs.
There is an immigration problem in the UK, we are being swamped by immigrants, and we don't even know how many are here, and the official stats are pretty high already. I know in my City there has to be hundreds, if not thousands of Polish people living here, and we don't even have 100,000 living here. I'm not against it, but it's pretty mad and will get worse, the thing with immigrants is that their skills seem to be better, and you can trust most of them. In labour work, we have a builder, he is from Poland, and he beats our English guy in everything, even comments on his work as "shite", heh.
Must say the only thing about immigration in the UK that bothers me is the housing problem, theres not enough houses to go around in SE England at the best of times and the huge immigrant population is definitely inflating that problem even further </mini rant> That said, 95% of immigrants i've met here have been overwhelmingly nice people and hard workers, so i really can't fault them... it's just a shame they're pricing locals out of the housing market really
Yup, there is not enough houses to go around, they build more, more people come in, there is way more Demand than there is Supply, think of it as the Wii situation a few weeks back, except there is going to be a shortage of Wii's constantly. Immigration needs to be stopped for a moment of time I'm afraid to say.
They better fess up some fair wages and benefits for immigrants if they want to be taken seriously. Banking on an immigrant-empowered workforce has its own economic repercussions.
Sorry, market forces at work here (and ye cannae change the laws of economics, capt'n!). The only way to stop immigration is for the local workforce to outcompete them. When your British builder does the same job for the same money but to a better standard than the Polish builder, the immigration will stop. Which is when hell freezes over, basically. Personally I do not see why we should rig up a protectionist market just so we can breed a nation of ignorant, complacent, spoilt, lazy, overprivilleged, overweight fat shits (oops, I thought the swear filter would get that one) with a sense of overentitlement who get to enjoy an unsustainably high quality of life at the expense of an exploited Third World. The useless, good-for-nothing chavs on the estates we lament about; the young employee who can't spell, add up or be arsed to do his job conscientiously but just wants to coast until his next pay check and Friday night so he can get rat-assed and get into fights again; the salesperson who couldn't tell you anything about the product they are supposed to sell you and radiates from every pore a fundamental indifference as to whether you drop dead on the spot or not; the celebrity-obbsessed (hey, it's money for nothing, and the chicks for free) airheads who think that the way to get a house is not to work for it but pop out another dumb baby; they are all the product of this protectionism of our nations from the basic fact that there are other people out there who will be prepared to do your job better, for less. It's time some of us felt the hot breath of competition down their necks and sharpened up their act. Life doesn't owe us. It was here first, and it is based on competition.
Well it was suggested on Newsnight to stop migration for a period of time (can't remember specifications) and it's a damn good idea, no the first time it's been brought up either. The guy who said it got "Booo", but that's because everyone is a ****ing chicken in the Government, and in the audience, and it's not very "normal" to say something like that, but that's the UK for you. No Balls.
You want balls? Here's balls. Open up our economy --any country can import and export. Watch as the Third World exports better quality food and screws over the local dying agriculture. Watch as cheaper, better, more reliable goods come from the Far East and kill our industry. Open up the job market, anyone can apply, from any country. May the most skilled, hard-working, determined, competitive person win. Watch as the Eastern Europeans and East Asians get all the jobs because they will work all hours God sends them, reliably and without complaining, turning out good work for less pay. Watch as their kids study hard, get straight A's in school and take all the good places at University, while the British kids hang out on street corners stuffing their faces with junk food and cheap booze. Watch how schools will compete for their custom to boost their league tables (sorry, no British kids --we want that bright Polish or Asian kid who has a way with maths and the violin). One generation later, they can speak and write English better than the locals and take all the high-power, high-status jobs. One generation later and they own all the assets. But we won't do that. We will keep our protectionist economy, and keep our borders closed. Because we have no balls to compete.
For me the realisation that english people were lazy was going to collage and having to compete with chinese and korean people who had learnt alot more than I but I just started working harder while alot of my freinds have not done so well. The people who live here don't seem to understand how lazy they have become.. I sit agast while people discuse the latest friday night pub crawl as I have no plans for the weekend apart from revising and meeting up with some freinds for an afternoon and doing work. If you work hard early in life you get to do cool projects later in life which will seem easy as your brain will be trained up to work hard.
Not at all. We will keep the status quo the way things are, because it largely benefits us. That's what's important. How we're doing. The job of a country is to do the best by it's citizens, and just because the world as a whole might be fairer if all trade was fully free and all jobs totaly open, a country isn't out to make the world a fairer place. It's out to make the country a better place. I'm sorry to say that, going on the anecdotal evidence my brother and his girlfriend(they're both in the merchant navy) provide about phillipino and polish workers respectively, the work isn't done all hours, it isn't done without complaint and it sure as hell ain't done reliably. ****, my brothers company had to abandon all phillipino crews after the small number of ships they set up with no euro officers ran over (yes, as in, oil tanker ploughing through a fishing boat) more ships in 6 months than the rest of the fleet nudged in a year. I may not disagree with you on the idea of free markets, but quit the whole "we're ****, everyone from non-privalged places is awesome" crap, it's nowhere near as you true as you in your scare-mongering hyper-cynical mode would have us all believe As for chinese goods being more reliable..you've been exposed to too much lead paint...
I don't understand why our country should do things best for the country it should do things best for the world as a whole. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_theory if countries are always competing with each other the net outcome is not benificial to the world as a whole as reasorces, time and effort are wasted on the compotition. If we cooperate more we can achive more as a species. People are always looking too short term.. I fail to see why we need countries anymore now that we have high speed comunications and that cultures are converging. Give it a few thousand years if the species is still around and they will lookupon us as adults upon misbehaving childeren and shake their heads in wonder at our follys as they will see it so much more simply with the benifits of hindsight.
Immigration is one reason why so many English move away from the UK. In 10 years time it's going to be nuts, the whole of Poland will be living here, every 1 English person you see, you see 1 foreigner, now I'm not racist in anyway, but it's not right. UK will not be the UK anymore, it will be called "All the world on one little Island" tbh.
THe problem with that line of reasoning is that no nation is an island anymore. We live in a globalized society and a globalized economy and any nation which refuses to adapt to that reality does so at it's own peril. Lets say that a nation could indeed close it's borders to immigrints effectively. The businesses of that nation would then have to pay domestic low skilled workers more money which would make them non-competitive with imported goods and services. In this day and age the business is going to go to whoever can do it better or cheaper, nationalities are pretty much irrelevant. Maybe it shouldn't be this way, but the people have consistently voted with their wallets for the cheapest goods, even if it costs them their own jobs. It's already happening in some places and guess what, the world hasn't ended. The CBC was reporting recently that half of the population of Canada was born elsewhere. In the last few years, international migration accounted for over 60% of populations growth in British Columbia, with the largest portion of that growth coming from China. There are over 200 languages spoken in Canada, and yet, for the most part, everyone seems to get along. Change is inevitable, how we deal with it is up to us as societies.
That would kind of defeat the whole point of being a country. A country being a large collective which works to further the collective's aims and goals. If we look to the success of capitalism versus communism over the last 100 years, I think we can quite quickly dispell any notion that competition would be bad for business. The net outcome of competition is bigger, it's better, it's faster, and there's more of it. Why not? and just to be pedantic, there are far more indians, austrailians, and irish people in this country, yet I don't see you complaining about any of them. Also, even if every person in poland moved to the UK there'd still be half of many of them as there'd be British people. (corrected the typo, sorry, it was bugging me) Look to the UK for a prime example of a country being extremely progressive when it comes to globalisation. A country can make globalisation work for it's own interests, the economic situation it brings it not some big monster that has to be succumbed too. National intrests can still be worked for.
so are you saying that you think english people are inherantly supirior and should stick together because it's right? I personly coulden't give a damm what 'race' you are aslong as I can get along with you.
Poland was an expample, I could of said "Americans" or "Indians", at the end of the day they are foregners. Did I say that Kipman? Or did you just make that ******** up? There are TOO many people migrating to England, that's it, there will be no houses for anyone to move into, no jobs for anyone to get, I could go on, I'm not against it, but at the rate it is estimated to go upto, it's insane.
Its market forces, when there are no jobs for people to immigrate for they'll stop. Simple answer get the lazy dole skivers off there arses and get them working, until then i for one welcome our new polish over lords (sorry couldn't resist)
So the problem is that housing is expensive and that good jobs are hard to find, and this is somehow the fault of people migrating to the UK? The same is true where I live, but here the problem is not immigrints (though some try to blame them) it's the fact that labor costs make it economically unfeasible to build a house that sells for less than $250,000 dollars and the exodous of high paying low skill jobs overseas. Neither of these can be blamed on migrants. The reality is that the world has changed. Labor is labor everywhere you go and your competition for a job is less the Polish migrant than the person in Malaysia willing to work for $.10 an hour.
