I've been looking at various threads on the forum and I see people say yep I'm doing 15 work units a day for seti and various other things then I look at my machine, Which is not the fastest machine in the world buts it not a pentium 150 Mhz either and think so why am I only able to do 1 work unit a day if I'm lucky the main thing I use my system for is encoding films etc so any help on how to improve system capability is greatly appreciated (remember I'm on a budget so plz no comments along the line of you need to go buy this athlon64 processor) :)

    My machine is basically

    CPU : 1.3 AMD
    MEMORY : 256 PC2100 DDR
    GFX Card : NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X
    Mainboard : K7VT2

    other useful information (I think)

Front Side Bus Speed : 2x 100MHz (200MHz data rate)
    Memory Bus Speed : 2x 133MHz (266MHz data rate)
    Maximum FSB Speed / Max Memory Speed : 2x 133MHz / 2x 133MHz

    Maximum Installable Memory : 4096MB
    Maximum Module Size : 1024MB

    Logical/Chipset 1 Memory Banks
    Bank 0 : 256MB DDR-SDRAM 2.5-3-3-7CL 2CMD
    Speed : 2x 133MHz (266MHz data rate)
    Multiplier : 4/3x

    Memory Module 1 : 256MB 8x(32Mx8) DDR-SDRAM PC2700U-2533-700 (CL2.5 up to 167MHz)

    Temperature Sensor(s)
    Board Temperature : 34.5°C / 94.1°F
    CPU Temperature : 55.0°C / 131.0°F

    Voltage Sensor(s)
    CPU Voltage : 1.79V
    +3.3V Voltage : 3.22V
    +5V Voltage : 4.70V
    +12V Voltage : 11.86V
    Standby Voltage : 4.58V

    CPU INFORMATION
    Package : Socket A PGA
    Multiplier : 13/1x
    Generation : G7
    Name : Duron M7 (Morgan) 180nm 1-1.5GHz 1.5-1.75V
    Revision/Stepping : 7 / 1 (0)
    Stepping Mask : A1
    Core Voltage Rating : 1.750V

I've put all the information that I think might be needed in here all the information was got by running the sisoft sandra tests but I'm not sure that this bit is right >>> Maximum Installable Memory : 4096MB

because two of the slots are DDR and two are SDram but when i put both types of memory in it only detected the DDR so any help on why I'm going wrong or how to overclock or just generally improve the system will be appreciated. I've just made a deal with some one for two sticks of 256 DDR pc2100 memory so I'll be able to increase the memory, Which I'm hoping will help.

I think the people gettin 15 WU's a day probably have multiple machines. Or high end machines (3 ghz+) on all day

I left my XP 1900 (1.6 Ghz) on for the weekend when I went away, (about 36 hours of on time) and I only got ~10 WU's done, so don't sweat it.

how many WUs are you currently putting out/day?

are you using CLI or GUI client?

    what is the avg. time/WU?

im currently getting 8 WU/day from my 2200+

and should be getting about 14 from the duallie.

I should have mentioned that my machines on 24/7 when i run seti on my main machine it averages a work unit in about 6-8 hours i'm using the gui and if I left seti running continously it would do about 2/3 work units a day but i only run seti at night because during the day i'm normally busy encoding kvcd's. But any suggestions on changing settings to speed any part of the system up will be appreciated.

well, thats slow. first thing to do is to install the CLI client and you should see 2-3 hours fall off of your time. check the DC section of the forum on how to install it if you need. increasing the amount of memory on the computer wont make much difference. so i would mainly suggest a better proc, 1.8ghz durons can be had for £28, or buy a second hand athlon, they will both provide some better SETI power, the athlon will be faster due to the higher amount of cache. memory bandwidth and timing is also important for higher SETI times, so see if you can alter the memory timings in the BIOS, or increase the front side bus.

Don't know if it helps but i've just run pcmark2002 and got these results

    CPU = 3300
    Memory = 2145
    Hdd = 84

id suggest a new power supply as well, it wont do a thing for seti but its just a generally good idea, those lines are looking very low to me

*definitely* get one if you plan to beef up to new hardware

One problem that might well be killing your pc's performance is

    Code:
Front Side Bus Speed : 2x 100MHz (200MHz data rate)
    Memory Bus Speed : 2x 133MHz (266MHz data rate)
IIRC the later t/birds (this should include yours) are multiplier unlocked, its doubtful you have multi options, but if you do, knock it down to 10 and increase the FSB to 133 (this *might* not work, but it should) that should then give a small boost to the cpu and you'll be running sync with the memory as well.
On the subject of this, do you have options for memory timings in your bios?

I've just had a loook at the Bios other than the normal settings of boot device priority etc the only things I can really change are

    Spread Spectrum options are enabled/disabled

Cpu Host Frequency which are Auto and then anything between 100 and 248 Mhz (its currently at 100mhz on Auto)

Sdram Frequency which is either Auto, 200 Mhz or 266 Mhz

no idea what any of that means but thats what its says.

the reason I'm after ways of improving the system is because I don't think the system is reaching its full capabilty and I want to see what its capable of (perferably with out it going BOOM!!!!) :D

Ok I think I've thought of a way around the power supply power. I've been looking though the various old cases I've got lying around one of them has a 300 watt powers supply that claims it was built for pentium 4's so i'm going to put that in my system and run the motherboard and hard drives from one power supply and the fans, cd-burner and A : drive and lights from the other unless it would be better to run the motherboard and fans from one and the harddrive's cd-burner from the other? any thoughts anyone?
