Forgetful Americans. I wonder where they go? http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/06/study-says-more-than-10-000-laptops-go-missing-at-us-airports-ea/ John the laptopless
Even if only 65% are never claimed - that's still a lot of laptops PER WEEK ! I can see some insurance claims from dishonest people needing an upgrade. But the rest? John
In the UK there are big auctions for lost baggage. You can turn up and bid for stuff, though you never know what is going to be in the suitcase until you get it. I suppose the laptops must go there.
This sounds like the little bluetooth headsets lost at malls. My niece found one, reported it, and the security guy said "you should just keep it, we have a ton of these things". So they said just leave it and if no one claims call us. They got a free headset. So if you lose one, just go claim one at a local mall for free, you'll be doing the security people a favor.
Even if half were just attempts to claim someone else's lost laptop, that's still 5000 lost per week They say that 45% are claimed, so i guess the remaining 500+ laptops per week are stolen. None left to be found anywhere. You'll have to either steal one or buy one.
Damn I am taking my laptop on holiday in a few weeks, when I go through that security scanner, I am making sure my Dad and little Brother are infront of me, and my Mum and Girlfriend are behind. No way anyone is grabbing that. And I will keep a bloody good hold of it while in the airport. Does anyone if UK airports make you take your laptop out of the bag to scan, or do they put it through in the laptop bag?
I dunno about UK airports, but aussie airports make you take the laptop out. Don't worry, just use your family & woman as human shields, and your laptop will be fine
at heathrow you now keep the laptop in the bag as they have bought more powerful scanners, don't think any other airport in uk has them so you still take the laptop out of the bag
I expect they will want to x-ray it and make sure it's actually a functioning laptop (Ie, turn it on (I'd have it turned off before it was x-rayed, thanks to paranoia) and do something etcetc. shift the porn and pirated films off the desktop ), in the UK at any rate.
