Just go to http://linuxiso.org/ and pick out your flavor of linux and there will be links to where you can download it. Once you've tried it out and found it to your liking, then you can go to that distro's home page and I'm sure they have a link for sending them some money. But for the most part, you can download linux for free. Edit: The best distro is going to be totally subjective. I've run red hat 6.2, red hat 9, debian stable, slackware 9.1. Out of those I really loved Debian and I'm now using slackware to get a feel for it....pretty nice so far. If you have a fairly higher end machine, then red hat or mandrake are usually pretty good to get started on. They are bloated, but fairly easy to install. Debain and slackware are a little harder to install, but run much leaner and work well on older systems. I'm running it on a PII 233.
