Heya, I'm looking to buy a couple of new batteries for Canon DSLR's (20&40D&G4, Canon model BP511) but have kinda hit a wall. There are plenty of places selling batteries at anything between £5 and £50, so I ask you for recommendations. Where have you bought yours and are they any good? The original Canon-batteries are out of question as those are clearly just rip-offs, then again I don't want to end up buying crap either. So then, Canonists, where to look? Thanks.
when i had a 40D I had a bunch of 7dayshop batteries of grab a load of cheap ones off ebay, they are all much of a muchness.
Hey Jipa, I've been using Akkula.fi for other battery stuff, but they have a Weiss-branded BP511-battery in stock. I don't have any experience with the brand itself, but they do offer 36 month warranty for them. Verkkokauppa does sell Lenmar batteries and they worked really well for me when I had them for my old Olympus E-3. They cost a bit extra, but they were equal to the original batteries which is something I can't say for Hähnel. I've had Hähnel for my Oly gear and also for my 7D and they are pretty much crap (at least for the price). Oh, almost forgot the link to the Lenmar There are probably cheaper ones out there, but 20€ doesn't sound too bad to my ear. Darkened
Not sure on where (WEX I think) but I've got Ansmann batteries in my 7D, about 1/3 the price, for about 90% of the power of the original Canon ones!
The prices look right, but they don't seem too willing to ship to Finland. Thanks! I'd never heard of Akkula. I think in the ~20 € region you should get some decent batteries. 40-50 € for such a thing is just too much. I mean look at the energy density/cost/whatever-factor you get on regular RC-batteries and it's pretty obvious how much the brand costs on camera batteries...
I have a smattering of different 3rd parties for my 550D, never had a problem with any of them. I know you can get some that won't tell your camera how much is left, they go from full to dead but all mine so far have been fine in that regard. All ~£5 ebay jobbies.
I forgot to mention it, but over here the batteries make even more of a difference due to the cold weathers! I should also buy batteries for my father and he's a bird/nature photographer which means spending hours in -20 C... That really tends to kill the cheap batteries - even if they work just fine in the summer time.
Duly noted! Probably won't affect me too much here, mine were fine in the snow those few days we had it but i'll keep it in mind!
When I was looking for batteries, I ended up buying batteries from Weiss. Seems indistinguishable from the official Canon version that came with the camera, didn't notice any problem using it out in the cold for an hour or so.
No problem, hopefully it helped Everything is relative though. I'd take 50€ original batteries any time for my 1Ds MkII, but no dice. About 185€ for Ni-Mh battery here... Darkened
