Hi all, Admitadly it's been a while since I spent much time here (had to cut back and reclaim some free time ) but what happened to the website review forum? I've recently set up www.tripcost.co.uk and I was hoping to get some good old fashioned and honest constructive criticism bit-tech style. So assuming there's not now a rule against this, if anyone wants to take a pop here, please do
My car isn't listed. Submitted details. Cool site tho! It's bookmarked and will probably be used regularly.
I did. Thanks for the uber fast reply!!! You got a FTP connection to your brain? [ninja!] Oops! Calculated wrong... corrected UK mpg figs sent via webform.
I wish, the site was recently featured on bbc2's working lunch, so suddenly I've had a lot more traffic and email to deal with. The end result is I spend my Saturday in front of the computer working on the site and replying to emails The mustang is now in, and just FYI, to go from lands end to john o groats in that beast will cost around £150...it'd be so worth it though.
Design aspects would come under Art & Photography, code problems under Software. Grammar Nazi come under me. In FAQ - "your self" is yourself, "wont" is won't, "its just not" it's just not, plenty more. Don't rely on spell checkers.
Cheers for those, I'll get them sorted soon. I suppose it's more of a design critique I'm after, although really it's just the whole user experience I want evaluated.
Yeah, I've seen that on a few of the cars, the data comes from multiple sources, I'm currently in the middle of re-entering and verifying all the cars to remove errors like that, as well as get rid of the duplicates, re-name the badly named ones and generally neaten up the car list. So far I'm about 1% through the list, so it's gonna take a while...
The big thing that I noticed is that the resizing is properly screwy, in that the map area resizes as your resize the browser, but not by enough. Personally I cannot stand that shade of green, but that is personal taste and others may well like it. I would also left align the menu text on the FAQ and News pages. At the moment, they don't look quite right and I think that would solve it. Finally, I would not have the Advertise section automatically open in a new page. Websites that do that really, really get on my nerves. All it needs is its own section just as the other tabs have. On the whole though, the site feels pretty slick, most impressed. NB, there are a couple of page validation errors that you may want to look at.
Cheers for the feed back, can you please clarify what mean by the resizing issue (srceen shot would be great), I've done some pretty heave testing in IE6, IE7, Firefox, Safari, and Chrome, and not found any issues, so if some still exist, I really need to get that sorted. I did want to have a separate page for the adverts section, but to be honest, at the time of creation I just didn't have enough information to fill a page, hopefully when I get some more time in the future I'll fix that. Now you've mentioned it, I think you might be right about the left aligning, I'll try that and see how it looks. I'm aware of the validation errors, but I've found in my experience, the only real use for full validation is keeping clients happy, as long as it works in all browsers (which sometimes even fully compliant code wont do) its fine. Same goes for google and other search engines, as long as there are no serious errors, they don't really care. That's not to say I don't want it to be fully compliant, after all, this is currently one of the most viewed sites I've made, but validation isn't that high on my priorities Thanks again though, I really appreciate in depth feedback and suggestions for improvement.
Added another car for you, Canadian 2009 Mazda 3 GT manual It’s a nice site, I don’t have any issues with it. Except that none of the units are in Canadian. But I see that it’s a work in progress.
I'm not getting that. I can resize the window, and the map doesn't resize at all... just the window. It's smooth, and fast also. I'm using Firefox 3.0.4 Ouch!
Ah, I think I see what you mean now, in that the map's view port doesn't change when resized, only when journey is calculated. That is a known issue that I'm currently working on, but I haven't found a good way to achieve that with the google maps API yet, all my attempts so far have actually made it worse, so I decided to leave the map as it is until I've found a perfect solution. I'm pretty sure there must be a way to fix this, but the API's documentation is huge, and not particularly easy to get around
The left hand menu appears to be about 10mm too high, it's not lined up with the map properly, and seems to be half covering a logo? (As viewed in firefox) RwD
Ahhh crap! cheers for pointing that out, I made a change and then didn't check it in all browsers, it's a rookie mistake and you hate to see it. I suppose that's what I get for using chrome...
Fixed. Thanks again for the heads up, if left to my own devices I might not have viewed it in firefox for days :? Also, I've noticed today that most of my referrals have come from stumbleupon.com, which is a site I'm not familiar with, so I thought I'd check it out. But I can't seem to find any tripcost entries on the site, am I misunderstanding how that site works or something?
Much better, and a very useful site btw! Bookmarked... and my car requested... worrying that my next car purchase will increase fuel costs by around 25% ahh well RwD
