i got an ATI Sapphire 4870 1gb and one NV Gainward 250gts 1gb Deep Green edition.. i have tested both cards but didnt notice much difference. the only game that i play is guild wars (and i m waiting years now for gw2 xD), i m doing some basic work at photoshop/dreamweaver and watching movies. my only concern is that the nvidia card has physx and cuba but its dx9 and on the other hands the ATI card seems to be quite powerful and has dx10.1 any thoughts?
The 4870 has greater or equal performance to the GTS250 in most games, except Crysis of course where the green team used to reign supreme. However, the 4870 isn't the coolest graphics card ever, nor the most efficient and if this matters to you the GTS250 is a better bet.
As mentioned previously, if efficiency is something you care about, stick with the GTS 250. To further this argument, I'd also suggest sticking with it if you really aren't going to be playing any other games, especially more modern ones, and if you want some extremely good performance in Photoshop (since it can now be accelerated by CUDA capable GPUs -which the GTS 250 is-) and again, as previously mentioned, the GTS 250 is a DX10 card. If you want the best performance in that single game, and better performance in possible future titles if one does appear that you like, stick with the HD 4870.
thank you for your replies guys. you completely change my mind! i was just about to keep the 4870 but i really trust the ppl in bit-tech. So if you say 250 i say "250 yea baby "
If you cant tell the difference, then just sell the one that gets the best price. Money in the bank is better then a card gathering dust (and dropping in value)
I think ATI does photoshop acceleration too (i may well be wrong). The site says "has a display driver that supports OpenGL 2.0 and Shader Model 3.0, which is used by the GPU to perform rendering effects". You can try to underclock and undervolt (if its a vanilla card; if your card is the black cooler one I'm retty sure it does not have voltage control) the 4870 to save power consumption as it doesn't do it on its own. The 4870 is a much better card than the 250 performance wise and based on your res the 4870 may just do that bit better when GW2 finally arrives. For me its 4870 everytime. I
