Sadly, that isn't entirely the fans. A good 80% of the noise from a 360 is the bloody DVD drive :/ Regardless, it is still louder than the PS3. However, when you're gaming, how often do you listen intently to the fan noise in the background?
yeh when its loading through the dvd drive it is louder but would this not be the fans working harder because of loading info of the dvd for games and the extra work and heat that causes
The fans are not quiet, by any means of the word, but they're really not that bad, especially not compared to the DVD drive. If you were to run a 360 without using the DVD drive (as in, taking it out), then it'd be more apparent. It doesn't help that there's been absolutely no attempt at noise canceling anywhere in the console.
i mean when ur at the dashboard the 360 isnt working hard then when u load a game or dvd it works harder so the fans speed up to remove more heat (PC's do this)(the same as your car sitting idle, the fan goes out automatically when the engine gets too hot) i just assumed this was the reason but yeh maybe ur rite maybe it is the drive. i thought tho you can put in whisper quiet fans yourself and this makes it quieter

They really should have used bigger fans to get lower rpms for the same amount of air throughput. The internal shroud is no better as it doesn't fully cover both heatsinks thus not forcing the air through all of the heatsink. Meh it's the DVD drive that's by far the worst, as stated above. But I just turn up the ol' AV receiever and the 5.1 easily drowns it out. I will say that I never watch a film on the 360 now, although playing a DVD is a lot quieter as the DVD player spins much slower (try it )
Yes, there is a certain amount of fan rmaping in the 360 environment, but as shown in the video, there's simply not enough direction for the flow. What you can also see, ten to twelve seconds into the video posted by Koola, is the front of the GPU heatsink (Big flat one) is not long enough to cover two of the ram modules. As for the replacements, yes, they're Talismoon branded (Unsure as to whether Talismoon actual manufacture them or just brand them, never seen any up close and personal). However, the video has the entirely wrong idea about the intercooler, because the intercooler is an absolute bag of arse, I would strongly recommend against ever using one. When it comes to the fans added in the video, I'd rather tap some 12v lines and drop them down to artificially lower the RPM of custom added fans, and slap them on the inside of the RF shield, to avoid the ugly However, if the 360 is appropriately placed and not crammed into a corner, the existing fans are more than enough to get the air into the case, it's just badly directed when it gets in there. Using bigger fans would have been nice from a noise perspective, but they would add some girth to the console that I'm sure Microsoft would rather avoid. I think the best solution for anyone wanting bigger fans is going to be the Lian Li 360 case that's been seen once or twice so far in assorted shows. Kempez: For lowering the noise of playing a DVD, the HD-DVD addon is excellent for crapping on the noise produced. Useless if you already have a good standalone DVD player, but hey. It also makes a brilliant beer holder, because it's ass heavy, and holds a 500ml can nice and stable.
Ye I had the HD-DVD add-on but sold it as I wasn't impressed with the quality of the output on it. Luckily for me I got more than I paid for at the time The PS3's Blu Ray was a superior picture to the HD-DVD player add-on in my experience. @ shigllgetcha - there is a certain amount of fan noise from the extra cooling needed when the CPU/GPU get hot, but overall it's almost all DVD noise from the speed of the disc spinning.
i think you may be right on that one, hd-dvd doesnt look quite as good on my xbox as it does on my hcpc. Tho' bluray and hd-dvd on the computer both look pretty much the same to me. As hd-dvd is dead picture quality is a moot point as the ps3 being the only one with bluray makes it the default winner on that front. As it happens i'm just about to order a load more hd-dvds as hmv have added more to their sale (i already own about 30) but quidco is down The 360 is my personal fave, as im a pgr whore, it has the most cheap games because its been around the longest and it doesnt have controllers which give me hand cramp. I still quite fancy a ps3 tho but mainly for use as a standalone bluray player (silly pcs for not supporting truehd and dts master properly grrr!)
I suppose the real reason to worry with your 360 is when you don't hear those fans and that drive whirring away .

if you dont care about online abilities just buy ps3 and be done with it. If you have a massive friends list on xbox 360s buy it. XBL is kinda fail when very few of your m8s use it. I have both consoles for dif games. brought 360 for halo 3 only ( only other game i own is pgr4). Gears of War fails badly, Its too short and online mode isnt really fun due to lack of players. And PC gaming is home of online gaming not xbox 360, ( pc version of gear is at least half decent) ( and GOW 2 will have a pc release if you willing to wait for it) basically if you have a half decent pc you dont need a 360. Its exclusives all become games for windows, (halo 3 wont be far behind). Its 3 massive exclusives have came and past. ( well was 3 now only 1 lol) ( halo3 by itself wonder for how long) halo 3 gears of war ( now released on pc) mass effect ( was orginally reason to buy console for some) ( now on pc) ps3 Duel shock 3controller adds vibration mgs4 will be reason to buy the console for just about every sain gamer. gt5 final fantasy little big planet few more to name also Good thing is you will never get mgs4 on anything else or gt5 or final fantasy Just about personal preference. If as you said you dont want online or like hte controls your choice is easy p.s ps3 is silent in operation of blueray films. 360 sounds like a aircraft on take off whilst doing anything. ( it produces more noise than my pc does)
If you like, you could call the 360 an enthusiast's console. It is for the FPS loving, hardcore shooting, headset wearing type, who care more for framerates and anti-aliasing than for aesthetics and high definition media. The quintessential geek console. And it does this job fairly well. They've even given you a reason to mod your 360, and give it water cooling, in the form of annoying fan noise. But you see, I see a problem with this. Everything the 360 does best, the PC does better. The sort of person who chooses a 360 is probably more than capable of identifying a graphics card. With a PC, you get precision mice and keyboards, which are better for shoot-em-ups than controllers, and if you want, your 360 controller is easy to install anyway. To play online, on the PC you don't even have to pay a subscription fee - but you still get the same amount of enthusiasts willing to play with you in online multiplayer co-op mode. The graphics on a mid-range PC are similar/superior to a 360, and you could upgrade to get graphics which are far superior to any console. Even a cheap sub £400 PC, which will also do your homework, order your groceries and print your photos, will play games albeit at low resolution. And then there are the games. The 360's exclusives - the very reasons for buying the console - are things like Halo and GoW, which are terrific games, but even these are ported to the PC sooner or later. What we have then is a product made by Microsoft, not to compete with Sony, but with... Microsoft?! And then there is Sony's PS3.... This is on par with the 360 hardware wise. The 360 does some things better, the PS3 does other things better, though ultimately, they do the same job. Specced up they are both quite similarly priced, though the PS3 is more expensive by a hair, but makes up for the extra dosh with a blu-ray player. The online services for the PS3 are, atm, free. So, for those whose primary concern is not becoming overlord of the 1337, there is still the option to go on a fairly decent online service. This is not as good as xbox live, but not too shabby either. The exclusive PS3 titles, MGS3, FFXIII, GT5, Tekken 6, will all be released eventually, but will never be ported to PC, or any other console for that matter. The PS3 also gets Playstation Home, which is a sort of cross between Second Life, The Sims and Facebook, which sounds interesting (if not fun). And speaking of home, the PS3 looks right at home, under your new piano-black TV, next to a stack of games and high-def movies. So the verdict: If you're a casual gamer, who likes stunning visuals and brilliant exclusive titles, buy a PS3. If you're the sort of person who likes playing shooters online, with a headset on, and a can of red bull on the table, buy a PC. And buy a PS3 later.
i dont know, i hate PC gaming. its so much easier to go into a shop buy a 360/ps3 and never have to worry about compatabilty or minimum spec or how good it will look on my PC and it never has to be upgraded. like even when its lifespan is over, just buy the next one and the lifespan of the 360 is said to have 7 more years (or seven in total i cant rem) and the PS3 is 10 years in total-show me a PC that will ever be that future proof-youll have to upgrade many times in this space of time and i dont think you would realisiticly be using the same PC after 7 years im big into gaming but i just wouldnt even think of buying a pc for gaming-thats my personal opinion i know there are tons of pc gamers that think the exact oposite
I don't consider myself to be a 360 fanboy (though I do own one). In fact I am well aware that the PS3 excels in many areas - and the 360 in others. Other people picked apart your previous post, I didn't really feel like I needed to repeat what had been said... One thing that comes across as a bit daft is when people try and convince you that the PS3 works out cheaper - because you 'have to' buy a separate HD-DVD drive for the xbox and 'have to' buy the official wireless adapter. If you want a wireless Bluray-playing media centre, that's a different question - I just wanted a games console, and the 360 is a lot cheaper. Who buys a HD-DVD drive anyway? It's a dead format so I think you should remove that from the equation (Besides I've seen them being sold for as little as £25 now). Fair enough the Bluray drive is a big plus for the PS3, and if you want a Bluray player, it makes the choice of PS3/xbox a lot simpler. Totally agree, and also deciding which games you want is a big factor. But like I said they're so damn similar, it's like arguing about favourite colours
You don't have to upgrade all the time with a PC in order to play games. This due to the marketing manufacturers constantly telling you they have something better, but it's not always required. To think in another 3-4 years (never mind 7-10 years) where PC tech will have far surpassed the console hardware and graphical quality people will again be considering gaming on the PC. You just can't beat specific game genres on the PC such as MMO, RTS and FPS, but the consoles do better in other areas such as platform and driving. One of the primary reasons I choose to get a console was due to the mount of people using hacks/cheats online which is ruining online PC gaming. Whilst the console does not escape this all together, it is drastically reduced to the extend where online gameplay is enjoyable.
