I'm starting a small website to sell linux so more people (esp. with dial-up) can have an opportunity to use linux as well. (plus I'd like to be able to pay the internet bill each month!)

I'm selling them crazy cheap, but don't want to spam my site. I'm just trying to find the distros I can distribute for a fee, since shipping and CDs aren't free.

Any tips on how to find out without reading the license of each individual distro on each of their websites?

Is there a site with a list of which distros use which license?

I know I can sell fedora, and gentoo, but not redhat. What about suse and mandrake and all the rest?

I think you can sell any distro as long as you're not calling the work your own and just changing the name or something dumb like that. True you can't sell Red Hat though but I have seen sites that sell their cd's but just can't use the name. I think, as long as you just charge for shipping, cd cost and labor, you should be safe.

Cool, that's what I'm finding, is that most true linux distros are released under the GPL, you just have to make sure to steer clear of the "Enterprise Editions" of software that include closed-source code with the distro.

Technically I'm only selling the convenience of burning and shipping, and since that is not a concrete concept, I could charge $100 a distro if I wanted, but that wouldn't help spread open source software. (I'm thinking either $5/distro or $1/CD, but I haven't decided.)

Generally, if you can download the ISOs for free, you can happily sell it for £1,000,000 if you want.

I would say around £2 per CD, (which is around $1.50 ish) is a fair price. Remember there are lots of other sites out there doing the same thing, so stay competitive. Also you could whack them on eBay...

Well, here I am again asking the same question, because I'm getting VERY close to launching the site. (burned the first batch of x86 CDs and printed envelopes, ready for picture taking)

I'm going to be selling them for $1 each with $1 for shipping per 10 CDs, which IMO should be VERY competative.

I'm not really making enough to make it worth my while, but the idea of more people beinga ble to use Linux makes it worth it. (plus its cool having like 7 distros lying around)

I just want to be sure, because I'm a bit baffled by some of this... it is my impression that if I can download it free of charge, I should also be able to burn it and sell it. Some distros, like Suse, require me to register to download, and some have trademarked logos, so I guess I still need permission to use their logos.

Debian is my favorite right now, because not only can I sell them, they have an open-source version of their logo I can use on the packaging!

Still waiting to hear back from mandrake, suse, gentoo and fedora on the use of their logos... some of these companies are super slow on contacting people, and others seem like their watching their inbox 24/7!

Your technically not selling them. Your selling the media they are burnt on..

I think you can distro just about any linux package like that..
