So its been a looong time since I bought a DVD-R (i think my last one was a Pioneer 105 if that tells you anything), as most of my computers have come with them (80% of my machines are Macs). I'm getting a Silverstone SG01 for my PC, and have an MSI board with both SATA and ATA. I'm just not sure which drive to get, or which interface to get anymore. I know SATA really won't help with burning speed.

Any suggestions? I'm somewhat looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106263 & http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106245 , but I'm open to suggestions. Trying to stay under $40US.

    thanks!

SATA because they are phasing out PATA is my advice, plus it makes cabling neater.

Agree with all the above. I have some SATA optical drives and they were perhaps only a dollar or two difference in price. The cables are a ton easier to place than rounded or ribbon cables. Can't say there's any discernable difference in speed, but I don't mind really, they do the job. Let's see... have an Asus, Liteon with Lightscribe and a Pioneer. They're all various speeds of dual layer R/W drives.

As already mentioned, SATA optical drives, are no more expensive than PATA/IDE drives.

In order of preference, I'd recommend Pioneer (they constantly release firmware updates, to add more features, or to enable use of faster media), Samsung (usually very quiet), +/or LG (also quiet)

IME, all three of those are way ahead of Lite-on drives, which I've personally found to be noisy as hell compared to most other makes :eyebrow:
