I don't backup at all at the moment. But I really should. Mostly family photos and videos, and possibly some other files. 100GB would probably be plenty, but I'd rather not be restricted if I want to backup more.

What kind of a backup solution would you suggest? What do you use?

Some kind of a NAS would probably be overkill. I don't have enough data to warrant something running 24/7. I probably don't need automatic backups either.

Online backup? Well, anything more than 10GB or so would cost way too much. In fact any recurring costs are too much. It's also slow with 1Mbit/s upload speed, and I'm not comfortable with uploading all my family photos and email to a 3rd party server.

What about an external HDD? A 2.5" HDD like this that doesn't require separate power would be pretty suitable. The WD Passport in particular seems pretty expensive though. Are they reliable? Do you have other suggestions?

I don't have a set budget; I'd just like to find something that has a good value. Something around 100€ perhaps?

avoid portables, they are infamous for being unreliable

try something like the WD elements drive or similar, brand doesnt really matter imo samsung, WD or....that other one.

    Good luck.

Is that true for all 2.5" drives?

3.5" drives are a bit unnecessarily bulky, and most seem to need an external power supply.

Hmm, what about buying the disk and the external enclosure separately?

FYI, I just ended up buying a 500GB WD My Passport with USB3.
