Back for some more help on graphic card choice this time its for a low end gaming system.
Im going to be buying building 2 low end gaming systems. I pretty much going to follow the bit-tech's low end system in the what to buy hardware guide.

However i dont fancy spending £150ish on a 4850, surely theres a lower end card that can play modern games at playable (30fps) rates.

    any ideas?

There are very good deals to be had on second-hand 8800GTXs that people are selling around 90-100 ish if you dont mind buying secondhand. They are still very good cards, and more then capable of what you want.

Below that is the HD4670 or the 9600 GT (or whatever it is called now ), both can be had new for quite cheap.

    Or a 9800GTX+ for around £120..

Or try your luck (not mine, I hasten to add).

nah, he's done a bid, but i'm guessing that was too low. Anyway, i'll get my nose out of your business now, good luck on your search :thumb:

19" widescreen is mostly 1440x900. Using that will also allow you to cope with a lowerend GFX card for a while. You may find it too low (literally) for office tasks, as 900 really isn't that much.

As in, not very wide spreadsheets. Opening windows side by side wouldn't be as practicable as it is on larger widescreens.

no, i mean literally too low. All the generic screens people normally use at an office have 1024 height, 900 is really a lot lower. Compare it to a laptop screen if you will (most of them are 800 high).

For games, this is usually not a problem. :)

How would a HD4650 stack up for budget gaming?

Works for me, though Left4Dead and Grid have to be lowered to 1360x768 to get 60fps.

Whoa, really? That's pretty good for a mainstream gc.

I'd say go for an HD 4650. I think it's a good card for its price, and it will help AMD/ATI if you buy their product :)

Yeah, I was surprised actually. It gets 120FPS in HL2, though I can't remember whether that's at 1080p.
I mostly got it for Blu-Ray Decoding, but thought I'd like to play a few games, especially grid, on the big TV. I think the HTPC needs more RAM though - it struggles a bit with only a GB.

My sapphire one also came with a DVI-HDMI dongle, so paired with a five-quid HDMI cable from Wilkinsons, it runs brilliantly on my HDTV.
